It would probably take decades for a stem cell-based cure for spinal cord injuries. I read the other day that the spinal cord in injured mice were re-activated using nanotechnology. Protein cells were injected in the spines of the mice soon after injury. The mice could soon move the paralysed limbs. It wasn't a cure, but a huge improvement over paralysis. The research was done at Northwestern University. Human trials start in two years, after the protein's toxicity is tested.
