Xerox Star introduction & promotional video - part 1 of 3

Uploaded by: nfoo
Video Description:
This is where everything started. This is where Apple got it's ideas - or more so Steven Jobs - and later Microsoft.
The designers at Xerox did an amazing job and created something years years - decades - ahead of anything else.
It still amazes me how few has changed in the principles and how much "networked" they where back than. They had an workflow that's only possible today again, with the internet accessible for everyone!

You think that's something? Hold on to your hat, search for Douglas Englebart's 1968 demo, and then look for Sutherland's Sketchpad movie. I'd say those dudes were pioneers.

coppying printers? Mac/Lisa looks like crap compared to this! And Ethernet? why didn't Steve scoop this up? Xerox was way ahead, and there stupid boss didn't swallow up the gold mine his company found.

They used to have demonstrations of these well into the 90s. I'm sure a lot of the equipment is still around and works. I saw a hard disk for one of the once, it was a brick and I'm sure it weighed more.

Yes, but you must remember that one Star cost 16,000 $ (back then) and Xerox actually wanted you to to get 5 of these, and tons of peripheals.

Ja, but Xerox ... ( 7 months ago by nfoo)
Ja, but Xerox didn't care about what they had there. AND a Star workstation alone cost about 16000$ back then, as far as I know.
How much did the Mac cost again?
Steve Jobs made this available to the public and today they innovate in user interfaces as nobody else. So: I'm happy Jobs did it.

yes, how much did the first macs cost and why did microsft take over? because macs were not affordable. macs were business machines, only once windows swept the market did mac realize they messed up as badly as xerox did before them. they missed the boat.

Xerox had it before anybody else, but they dropped the ball. Sad for them. Good thing Steve jobs brought out the MAC or we would probably have been using Command line OS to this day. Most companies lack the balls to innovate unless forced to by their competition.

This is not where it all started, the Xerox Alto was the first revolutionary computer with a GUI, that is where Jobs and Apple got their ideas from. This came quite a bit later.

I sold them and was with the company for over 20 years. Actually you are partly correct. We redesigned the software to be UNIX compatible and its primary platforms were SUN workstations and PC's. We upgraded much of our installation base to SUN with out software, printers, network etc. The MAC didn't even come close to the abilities of the STAR.

I thought it was that Steve Jobs saw smalltalk environment, but this looks like what he was talking about in X.Cringley's "Triumph of the Nerds" movie. This was the result of Alan Kay's work right?
