Tony Rice Manzanita

Uploaded by: flatpickingGuitar
Video Description:
This clip is an excerpt from the "Advanced Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar" DVD from Flatpicking Guitar Magazine featuring Wyatt Rice. In addition to teaching advanced rhythm techniques to a number of bluegrass standards, Wyatt also teaches the rhythm accompaniment that he uses when backing up his brother Tony Rice in the Tony Rice Unit. Here Wyatt shows his rhythm technique on Tony's tune "Manzanita". Tony also appears on two other segments of this DVD, playing "Waltz for Indira" and "Devlin." The entire DVD can be purchased at www.flatpickingmercantile.com

Well not *the* best, but certainly one of the top 5 best atleast. Look up JP Cormier and you'll see there is actually someone out there who is just as good if not better. But Tony is still the man.

Are you kidding? that makes me laugh. Cormier is a hack compared to T. Rice, who is the most innovative player since Martin started making guitars. Best ever, case closed. You must be from Canada.

Cormier is my closest uncle actually. And when Tony can pick the other 4 instruments that JP plays, get back to me. Tony isn't that good really, he only knows 2 styles.

Oh and by the way "folz17" I just wanted to add that JP Cormier BEAT Tony Rice in the Winfield Kansas Bluegrass Flatpicking Championships, when JP was only 16 years old. He was in the top 3, Tony was not.

You think i'm just going to sit here and let some asshole call my uncle a "hack" and not say anything? The competition was judged by the audience watching the show and the festival organizers, most of which are famous bluegrass artists. Tony is great, but sorry he isn't "THE best". Tommy Emmanuel comes to mind, Clay Hess, Doc Watson, Chet Atkins etc. Doc is about as good as it gets in my opinion.

I checked the winfield site and I saw no mention of JP ever in the top 3. If I'm wrong, let me know. Not sure if Tony ever entered a Winfield contest. Winning a contest proves the winner is really good, but some of the greatest flatpickers have never won winfield. Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, David Grier, ect... Even Mark O' Connor says that he has lost more than he's won.

I agree totally, Tony's one of the best--I just love his style. I just wish he could still sing, I loved his voice. But if we're gonna choose the all time best flat top bluegrass pciker, hands down it's Doc Watson.

And what year was that? To the best of my knowledge, TR has NEVER entered the Winfield contest.
I like JP, though- he's a great picker.

This is a great clip and Tony is fantastic but for all around best flat-picker, I'd have to give that to Norman Blake. The sheer complexity with the combinations of rhythm, melody, and cross-picking of the stuff he plays puts him above Doc (who I think is great) in my opinion. Check out "Norman Blake, Flatpicker" on Youtube. I hear a lot of Norman in much of what Tony Rice plays.

I've heard JP. Good. But something about Tony's smooth effortless playing makes me never tire of hearing him. He's the best as far as I'm concerned

Doc played more melody, but Tony played cleaner. I don't think you can compare the two because they have two completely different styles.
Don't forget to throw Cody Kilby, Mark O'conner, and Tim Stafford into the mix of great flat pickers. I think Cody Kilby is the best guitar player Ive ever seen in person.
