Mahalia was singing this song as a prayer. Something going on between her and God, we were just fortunate enough to witness it. Her phrasing is another way she is showing us how she feels. She wasn't singing to entertain. She was singing to touch God. I believe that is exactly what she did.

The greatest times people sing is when they sing truthfully and whole heartedly to god!! and those watching and listening will see and be touched by the singers commune they're beholding. Whether you have the greatest voice in the world or not. The communing with god is What takes you a step above all the rest who aren't communing as she did

I can only imagine she looks so "sad" because she is really thinking about how truly AMAZING the grace of God is, that he would love us and still loves us as much as he did.....sometimes it just brings you to tears when you think of how undeserving you are of all of his grace and love!!!!

I agree. I love Mahalia Jackson, but this song is not one that should be slowed down so much. Lots of singers do the same thing with "Amazing Grace", though.
