Thanks to increased efficiency, the "Computers, Ipods, internet, cell phones, answering machines" etc of today can be manufactured at a relatively cheaper cost than the record players and B&W TV sets of the past. The appeal of industrializatoin is that the efficiency it demands produces constant improvements in output. Telling people to continue to work at this increased efficiency but not expect to reap more from it strikes me as rather... exploitative?

i believe ipods etc. are taken into account among the appliances. also consider that the cost of the appliances they had in the 70s has gone down, comparatively. if in the 70s a fridge costs for example 1/2 a monthly wage, now is more like 1/4. so even with new appliances (laptops ecc) now they still might be spending proportionately less on appliances than in the 70s. they had less appliances then, but they were proportionately more expensive. also now ipods etc. are seen as needs, not luxuries
