I think its pretty harsh to blame someone for other's mental illness... I'm sure there are plenty of people who had difficult relationship with parents and didn't went that way... I wish the movie was less of a investigation for the "cause"...

As far as I'm concerned the hands are form Geoffrey Rush - the actor who portrayed mature David Hefgott (in this clip we can see Noah Taylor as young DH). At least GR was listed as his own hand double in the credits for playing the piano.
