Ah...someone who's read the books! Ian Fleming in "Casino Royale" described Bond as looking like "Hoagy Carmichael with a scar on one cheek".

Hoagy was born in my hometown, Bloomington, Indiana. We have a bronze statue of him on campus (IU). I've been to his grave before many times. It is tradition to put pennies on his grave "Pennies from Heaven"...one of my music idols..btw-check out Dave Brubeck's version of the song, very good, much slower and darker, but very powerful rendition.

Hoagy Carmichael is one of the greats in my opinion. I have never heard a song of his that wasn't wonderful. Such a genius, and he seemed so normal in the movie roles he played.

I have to agree with both of you. The more I learn of his work, the more amazed I am by his talent. Several years ago, on the NPR program, Fresh Air, they did an hour long retrospective of Hoagy Carmichael's life. It gave me an even greater appreciation of his genius. Thanks for the post!
