it means that today's society NO longer values virtuosity and intelligence. it only embraces mediocrity and things that are easy to grasp. wonder why NOTHING great EVER happens in our world. i'm afraid it is all lost for us FEW individuals to indulge in and too keep fresh. On one Hand your right but on the other Hand I have to say that "always" is not the right word.Classical Music exists way longer denn Popular Music. Also I think Popular Music is not real Music, but Art. Most of the popular Musicians have no real Instruments in their Music, like Rap or else. For music the instruments are important and how they are played. Thats why I listen to Metal and Rock, too. The sung is for me at the 2nd Rank, the play is that what makes the "real" music.

i use the world trade example since its a recent reminder that the pyramids have been blasted, bombed, robbed and ransaacked for centuries..... but, they still stand, as does the aztec, mayans pyramids, native american hills, easter islands statues, stonehenge, coliseum, etc....the list goes on and on. YES, some of the examples have been preserved but years and years passed by with NO ONE ever trying to preserve them and they still stand. virtuosity NEVER dies. only fades into history...

i feel that popular music doens't and can't expand the mind. it's not that i don't enjoy it. it's the simple fact that excellence is NOT the primary reason for its exsistence. striving for virtuosic playing with the knowledge of technique is what expands ART. without technique true art cannot be found. popular music have limitations since there is usually NO advancement of technique sought in its music making. therfore art doesnt' exsist. to make it simple, no technique hinders the art.

Stupid question here. I've recently watched the dvd of Karajan conducting Beethoven's 7th, 8th, and 9th symphonies, and in those performances he used a baton while conducting. Is there some reason in particular that he wouldn't use it for Bolero? Or did he stop using it all together at some point?
