I know U R an old guy (if yr profile is legit) & Im sure youve seen 100s of Major League pitchers pitch (as have I) but when you make a statement like "(Bob) Gibson wasnt a great pitcher" it just makes you look stupid (as well as old). Gibson WAS intimidating. He was also an exceptional athlete who could have played probasketball, one of the best hitting & fielding pitchers of his era & despite being a power pitcher developed great control as he matured. I wonder what's yr criteria 4 gr8ness?

With all due respect, your assertion is preposterous.
Go Red Sox!
!!! Gibson`s own ... ( 7 months ago by randysadberry)
!!! Gibson`s own Cardinal players said he was an asshole! How would he fair today, if? he had to forget about all the intimidation that set the stage, for ANY! of his successful pitching. What would he have done? if a ROID! raging Jose Canseco had charged the mound, just ONCE! and hit him in the face with a HIGH HARD ONE! would he have been the same pitcher? would his ability to throw at the heads of hitters been forever effected? would he have the same confidence? NO!!!!!!!!!!!
So Bob Gibson was ... ( 7 months ago by herbiesnerd)
So Bob Gibson was an intimidating asshole. That doesn't mean he wasn't a great pitcher. He was one of the best ever, or ever will be-PERIOD. 17 strike outs in a world series game - thats hall of fame. When I was in Jr. High I got to meet Wes Parker of the Dodgers when he and Jim Lefebrve came to my school. I asked "are you ever afraid of the pitchers?" His answer was "the only pitcher I'm afraid of is Bob Gibson"! You charge Gibson, the next pitch is in your ear. Like him or not-he was great!
He made the ... ( 7 months ago by herbiesnerd)
He made the all-century team with the 5th highest votes for a pitcher behind only Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Cy Young and Roger Clemens. Thats the 5th best pitcher in 100 years. He was an animal on the mound.

As a lifelong (45 years of baseball watching) NY Yankees fan Sandy Koufax was the best ever. Better than Ryan, Seaver, Gibson, Clemens and anyone else I have seen. He could tell you what he was going to throw, 12-6 curveball or fastball and he couldn't be touched. His left elbow was a grapefruit size after evry start. Game 7 1965 World Series was one of the greatest, most courageous games ever pitched. 10 K's, 4 hits, no runs with a throbbing elbow. He was the best.

RIGHT, "SFFOOL76"..... 2 Days rest. Walter Alston, the Dodgers manager went to the mound in the 6th or 7th inning after Koufax gave up two hits and Alston essentially asked him how he (Koufax) was doing to which Koufax replied my arm/elbow is killing me and I can't throw any more curves, only fastballs. Alsto said even with just your heat you're the best I have. Koufax finished the game striking out 2 of 3 in the bottom of the 9th. Gratest effort I EVER saw still in MLB!

lol gibson said in an interview ken burns made it seem like yastrzemski got a hundred hits off of him...those two hits he got off of gibson were the only two hits he actually got off of him...nothing more...in fact, he struck out three times against gibson and only went 2 for 7 against him in the series

He is definitely an asshole. Ask any media member who has tried to get an interview from him or has dared to say "hello" and you'll get a story about how Gibson threatened them with legal action, physical violence or both.
HAHAHAHA! Gibson ... ( 6 months ago by radio187)
HAHAHAHA! Gibson couldn't carry Koufax or Ryan's jock.
To randysadberry: ... ( 5 months ago by skimarcus)
To randysadberry: You have no clue, man. First, don't put punctuation marks in the middle of sentences; it makes you look uneducated. Second, like Gibson said, he rarely threw at batters. Over a 17 year period Greg Maddux had more hit batsmen than Gibson and Gibson threw a lot more innings.. Gibson would brush people back and establish himself. What makes you think Gibson would be scared if someone charged the mound? He would probably just drill the asshole the next time he faced him.
how could you say a ... ( 5 months ago by 1dufflebagboy3)
how could you say a person who has; been selected to the all century team, been selected to 8 all-star games, won 9 gold gloves, won 2 cy young awards, recorded 17 k's in a world series game, and posted a amazing 1.12 era (which is a live ball era record) in the 68 season isn't a great pitcher...he has to be one of the top 10 pitchers of all time...he isn't the best but he is definitely a great one
gibson was a gold ... ( 4 months ago by Pearljammm)
gibson was a gold glove boxer so if they did charged the mound he would probably kick their ass
if gibson pitched ... ( 4 months ago by tymeiborg)
if gibson pitched today half the players he would face would piss their pants. also you couldn't be more wrong saying he wasn't great. listen to interview after interview of old ball players they all say he was an amazing pitcher.
Would they be ... ( 4 months ago by obbor4)
Would they be charging the mound before or after they'd finished changing the load in their diapers? Steroids, loaded bats, juiced balls and fairy-tale radar guns....Gibson was all the things mentioned (boxer, basketball player, pitcher, hitter, fielder...) Baseball is the one game that remains the same between the lines. Bob would have said. "Here's my ole 97. One under your chin and three climbing the ladder for you to swing at and miss. And, oh yeah, no need to warm anyone else up..."
Fisrt off, Gibson ... ( 3 months ago by ThisIsBilbo)
Fisrt off, Gibson is an all-time great. BUT...he played in an era of deadballs, bigger parks and higher mounds-just as did all those great 60's pitchers. And, to me, throwing a baseball at someone's head is not a strategy, it makes you a coward. Would Gibson be great in any era? Yes. But would he and the others of his time be as good since or today? VERY DEBATABLE.
BTW, since modern ... ( 3 months ago by ThisIsBilbo)
BTW, since modern players faced such noted headhunters as Clemens (all-time most hit batters), pedro, Randy Johnson, etc...I don't think they would be intimidated by Gibson nearly as much as oldsters want to believe. And, eventually, he would have to put it over the plate and, overall, today's hitters are better, stronger, less amatuerish in their approach. If Bonds could hit the Uni or Clemens 500 feet, he would hit Gibson, too.

I have had the good fortune of watching major leagers play for the last 50 years as well as having played the game on the High school and college level. I have seen Mantle Mays, Snider, Musial, Koufax etc in action. Believe me when i tell you they are using the same ball today that they used during that era.
Difference is that todays players are bigger and stonger ( juiced or not)Players such as Gibson , Koufax, Mays would not be as dominating.
