Sure, but when you can reach a higher standard of performing with female sopranos, why not? But I must agree, I also prefer to hear this piece by one of the college/cathedral choirs in England.

That really is a really immature comment, esp coming from a person who claims he is 100 years old.
There are different performances of the arts, different interpretations. Boys singing it and women singing it both sound great. As long as they are not out of tune or something, why can't people just enjoy the art?

I am a soprano who also sang in children's choirs. The boy sopranos were the better singers at that age, but peaked right before their voices changed. The fact is the peak of a boy soprano's voice is such a short period of time that it is difficult for a performing group to use them. It takes a long time for a counter tenor to be properly trained, but they are also amazing. A properly trained mezzo can handle the entire range as well, so there's no reason not to use them.

The Tallis sing nicely (much better than they do now) but the overall sound is a bit distorted (I don`t mean the recording). As is the frequent case with British groups the performance is top heavy, with very bright and a bit shrill sopranos tending to dominate the texture. At times this sounds as if the rest is only accompanying them. This impression is strenghtened by the fact that they transpose the music up (a minor third, I believe). Even so, their sense of theatricality is pleasing.

Indeed, the Tallis Scholars have on occasion rightly I believe been critcized for their studio-like sound. As for the dominating top parts, I believe it is perhaps something of a left-over from the English renaissance school which was always dominated by the top treble, which is evident in English music dating from the first half of the 16th century. After that it tended to blend with the continental styles; this is perhaps an English school interpretation of a continental style piece.

Well, be it as it may, but the contemporary British trebles are notable for the softness of their voices (unlike their continental counterparts who sound more "grainy") and I rarely get this impression of imbalance. As for The Tallis - as I mentioned I`m impressed by their theatrical way with this piece - with their very large range of dynamics they make it sound almost like a late Baroque music, a Handel oratorio of sorts!

(continued) But vocally they are clearly off their game for this occasion - the altos are barely audible and the lower voices sound uncomfortably wobbly - far from the typically instrumental style of the British choral singing. What I lack here is just this "studio-like" sound (how could that be the reason for criticism?).

ive spent alot of time on youtube and written alot of comments. ive seen so many childish arguements in the comments section.
im a music student and this is the first time ive looked up a piece of Renaissance music, and i dont know why i was expecting no same childish arguments; albeit with a slightly pompossly educated tone :)
we are all one in Gods eyes, huh?
i love the way theres not a held chord until the end, it makes this piece so powerful.
thanks for posting!!
