No Reply
Writer, double-tracked lead vocal: John Lennon
This happened once before,
When I came to your door,
No reply.
They said it wasn't you,
But I saw you peep through your window,
I saw the light, I saw the light,
I know that you saw me,
'cause I looked up to your face.
I tried to telephone,
They said you were not home,
That's a lie,
'cause I know where you've been,
I saw you walk in your door,
I nearly died, I nearly died,
'cause you walked hand in hand
With another man in my place.
If I were you'd realize that I
Love you more than any other guy,
And I'll forgive the lies that I
Heard before when you gave me no reply.
I've tried to telephone,
They said you were not home,
That's a lie,
'cause I know where you've been,
I saw you walk in your door,
I nearly died, I nearly died,
'cause you walked hand in hand
With another man in my place.
No reply, no reply.

Love "No Reply". Just listen to John's voice (the lead)! So unusual and wonderful. Of course the harmony from Paul (and George?) just adds to it!!

For me, No Reply takes off like a rocket at1:03. The urgency of the hand claps and strident beat fills my mind with pleasure and excitement. I've heard this song for over 40 years and I never grow tired of it.

I also think the best part of the song is at 1:03. It's such a trademark Beatle sound here. Nobody on earth can match the amazing vocal harmonies of John and Paul. There is something very special about the combined sound of their voices, isn't there? It's as if there's a 3rd new voice created when they harmonize. It makes my spirit soar!

Actually, I don't think I've ever noticed those handclaps before. Thanks for pointing that out. How interesting that with repeated listenings, one notices things that weren't heard before. I've heard this song more times than I can keep up with, and I'm not tired of it either.

when John comes back in after the handclaps, lol i used to listen to that over and over again back when i had the LP's now you can just do A-B repeat haha. There's something about Lennon songs that seem like he is saying so much more than the literal content. He might have downplayed his Beatles songs in later years, but I feel he gave a piece of his soul up in every song he did.

Nuculyerbush: I totally agree with your take on Lennon. He was a very deep, philosophical thinker and thanks to that depth and perception we were given the gift of beautiful, meaningful songs..they can be taken, as you say, literally, but there is so much of an under-current....there is so much that he is NOT saying that it makes it as important as what he is saying, if you know what I mean...you are very astute.

Originally John Lennon had intended to sing the higher harmony part of the chorus, as this was the original melody. However, his voice had deteriorated due to excessive use and Paul McCartney had to take this part, relegating Lennon to the lower harmony line.
According to Lennon in 1972, the Beatles' music publisher Dick James was quite pleased with "No Reply"

"No Reply" is a song by the Beatles from the UK album Beatles for Sale and the US album Beatles '65. It was written mainly by John Lennon and credited to Lennon-McCartney.[1]
The song is about a young man who is unable to contact his possibly unfaithful girlfriend, even though he sees her through her windows.

This is an mid early example of the Lennon double track.
He often felt he did like his own single tracked, normal voice and wanted to double track it, this is a good example of that technique.
He liked it alot!
