If Brian Wilson isn't in the band, it's not the beach boys. He wrote ALL of their music. All of the beautiful harmonies that they sing belong to HIM. Without Brian Wilson, all "The Beach Boys" are is a Brian Wilson cover group.

This song is the "anti-cool" of cool songs. Every other song of that wera was about going out and partying having a good time or some hot babe. this song is gutsy becasue it absolutely stood "cool" on its head. the harmonies here are exquisite.
