I saw Buddy Rich live as a very young kid (in 1977 at the height of my KISS fandom) and this man is the greatest drummer ever. NO COMPARISON!
I met him after his show (my brother in law was a big band singer) and he was cocky, but nice.
I cried when he died, but I watch these videos with admiration.
Buddy Rich was and will always be the greatest drummer.

You're wrong about that, cmoongo - First, you didn't know Buddy personally, so you can't say what kind of a person he was.
Next, all Buddy Rich owes the public is to give you your money's worth at his concerts, and on his records, which he certainly always did. How he diciplined his band is not your business. Buddy's life OFF the bandstand was no one's business except his.
Buddy gave 110% every time he played, and expected no less from HIS band.
Repeat that - HIS band. The BUDDY RICH band ~

hey mark, did you know him? my dad did, he played in kenton and woodey herman band and toured the world playing music. he told what kind of person he was, a asshole. he was not the only person that felt that way! buddy was the greatest drummer probably to ever live! you act as if he was your friend, get over it!

Hey, Cmoongo, did you know him? Your Dad did? So what? Buddy was an exacting taskmaster toward his musicians, and he blew up at people whom he didn't think measured up to his standards. It was his band, his rules. When a man pays your wage, you're beholden to his standards. A lot of people make a big deal about the bus tapes. But if you talk to Pat Labarbera and other guys who worked for Buddy for years, they only have good things to say about him. Sure he was tough-he was the best!

Thanks, dougalmac54 -- Actually, I DID talk to Pat LaBarbera when he was with Elvin, when they played the Jazz Showcase gig in Chicago.
Talked with him and Elvin for about 30 minutes. Pat had NOTHING but kind words for Buddy, and stated that every player that came through Buddy's bands always left as a better player. That is, if they had the maturity to listen to Buddy and take in what he had to teach them.

Dude, that band was a bunch of young punks who were disrespectful to him and deserves every note of those rants.
Read the "debunkings" of these tapes, by the veterans in the band who knew the shit Buddy had to deal with.
Read Frank Zappa's book on dealing with session musicians and orchestras.
It's a pain in the fuckin' ass.
