Some of the background for this, I guess, would be because you can play any mana as uncolored, and if you could play uncolored mana as any mana, you would be able to play any mana as any mana. ie.: "I play this red mana as an uncolored and use it to pay for this blue spell!"

The restricting of brainstorm and merchant scroll killed the deck though, and you never see it in competitive vintage anymore.
