Atkins Diet Quick Hits - How do I start?

Uploaded by: bowulf
Video Description:
I am starting a new series of videos based upon the questions or comments I have received either privately or in the comments section. Each of these videos will be targeted to answering that question or issue in short, less than 3 minutes video. I am hoping that these videos can be used as a Frequently Asked Question about the Atkins Diet or Low Carb in general.
In this video, I deal with a question I receive often. How do I start or restart the diet? I come up with three specific recommendations:
1.) Get the junk out of your house. There is no reason to start with cravings staring you in the face.
2.) Get and read the book. The book I mean is either the low carb book of choice or Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002).
3.) Hit the low carb recipe sites, like Linda's Low Carb, and browse the Induction friendly recipes. Make a menu for the week and go shopping.
The last half of this viewer's question was how long to do the diet. I somewhat answered this already in the last video, but my answer is always "forever. There is no "after" on the Atkins Diet."
I hope you like this series of upcoming videos.

If the boneless spare ribs are sauceless, they should be good. Remember you are allowed dressings (up 2g per 2 TBS) for your salad. Other than those two comments, it looks like you are off to a good start. Remember to get your pure water in addition to Diet drinks -- especially starting out to keep yourself regular.

maybe i should expand on that, i am going on day 9 and i have lost 7 pounds so far, i have about 50 more to lose tho. i am afraid that if i start to slowly add more carbs onto my diet that i will gain weight? Is it bad if i stick with strictly eating meats, eggs, cheese and vegtables only?

Excellent question, I will probably do another episode just on this topic in the future. I will answer it in respond to your other comment.
You can stay on ... ( 4 months ago by bowulf)
You can stay on Induction for a long time. I myself did it for almost a year. I would urge you to stay on it for as long it takes to get control of what you are eating and for as long you can be happy eating what you are eating.
My cautionary tale ... ( 4 months ago by bowulf)
My cautionary tale is that before you are done to have added all the food you will want to add. You can live the rest of your life on just that selection.
But you need to know yourself on where your tastes lie. If you are going to add it later, add it sooner.

you can't live on ... ( 4 months ago by mykfried)
you can't live on 20g of carbs for the rest of ur life, very unhealthy, it's a diet which should be done till target weight, then, you can have the recomended 150g carbs a day, along with excersise and keeping away from bad fats too often. But well done on your weight loss
Why can't you? ... ( 4 months ago by bowulf)
Why can't you? What is magical about about more carbs? Doing it til you hit goal and then switching is exactly the reason most Atkineers fail. I have spent the last 4 years at 20-40g per day, running marathons, and feeling the best I ever had. My blood work could not be better, and I have set new PRs in almost every race.
It seems to me that this diet both for weight loss and maintenance is extremely healthy.
Carbs are our most ... ( 3 months ago by pinksweatergal)
Carbs are our most important source of energy and brain function. Cutting out a whole food group cannot be a healthy thing. I lose 82 pounds in 11 months doing it and the weight came on very quickly. It creates a terrible rebound. Sally
Why are they our ... ( 3 months ago by bowulf)
Why are they our most important source? Because the last 50 years we have foisted it on ourselves? The body can produce whatever carbs its needs, and let me remind you that you don't eliminate all carbs or even entire food groups permanently as part of the diet. The terrible rebound happens due to not continuing to follow the lessons one should learn on the way down.
After you lost the 82 pounds, did you change back to old ways of eating?
You said the body ... ( 3 months ago by pinksweatergal)
You said the body can produce the carbs it needs? How does our body produce carbs? This diet does take weight off but statistics are sobering regarding rebound weight gain.
Look up ... ( 3 months ago by bowulf)
Look up gluconeogenesis -- it is the process of converting proteins into glucose.
Rebound statistics for all diets are around 85-90%, low carb is no better or worse, but that is more a response to people failing to make long term changes and staying motivated for the journey rather than a race to a finish line. In fact, the long term studies (two year) that have been done have shown that low carb followers rebounded less than other diets.

it is a not health diet for long term.

I am 4.5 years in and couldn't be healthier. Some other Atkineers I know have been on for over 15 years with no associated problems. Whether 2,5,50 years, I remain unconvinced of the necessity to eat refined sugars, starches, or eat over 300g of carbs daily to be healthy.

yes it is. people confuse the first two weeks(induction) as the whole diet. in fact the ultra low carb stage only lasts about two weeks. then you slowly add more veggies, nuts, seeds, certain fruits, even some starchy carbs.

Yes, and after 4 years I could not have better blood and urine analysis with my last 4 physicals. My fitness levels have been through the roof, and I have friends who have been on the diet for years with similar results.
That's also why there are growing number of studies proving the same thing, like the recent Israeli study.

it depends how how much meat you eat. if u are eating only the amount ur doc reccommended along with many vegies that u shoulld be fine. too bad that guys can eat many of the fruits. But u dont know that some fruits do contain carbs right? Anyway, if this works for you i have nothing to say. but good luck

I eat probably 8-24 oz of meat (chicken, beef, pork) per day. As for the fruits, we can eat many fruits in the later stages of the diet. It's a misconception to think of it as a zero carb diet, but that said what do fruits have that veggies couldn't provide. There are often more Vitamins in the veggies and less GI impact than fruits. This overabundance of fruit is a recent historical phenomenon.
My suggestion would ... ( 3 weeks ago by bowulf)
My suggestion would be as you are trying to lose the weight add the foods you think you will be doing during Basic and the exercise you will likely be doing, and you can guarantee it will keep it off. PT alone without eating right could lead to the weight returning. I am not one for using a diet as a trick to lose the weight quick as you'll likely not learn the lessons to keep it off even with exercise of Boot. Or after boot camp is over, you start making your own choices again.
