The reason that the theatrical edition is only 9 hours is that cinema's don't want movies who last longer then 3 hours.

This is really good. I wonder what that is at 0:25? It looks like two elves running around but I never remember that in the films. Though I think they said something about releasing more footage to the already extended editions, perhaps that was a glimpse of it.
