about the s8000:
the only reason you'd buy this is for the 18x optical zoom.
if it has purple fringing on full zoom,it's definately not the one to buy.

They are not a con; the Fuji and other super-zooms like the Panasonic FZ18 start at a much wider angle equivalent than the S5 IS (27-28mm vs 36mm) - so although at telephoto you do not see a lot more you get a much better wide-angle.

the whole reason i got the s8100fd camera was to get in a lot closer - or so i thought.
but with seeing 12x on the canon and 18x on the fuji, anyone not knowing and wanting a good zoom would go for the fuji, when in actual fact it's hardly nearer than the canon.
also, i'm not keen on super wide angle (like 27mm or 25mm).they might squeeze more image in,but they distort verticles - rather like a fish eye lens obviously not as extreme.

Mike, good point, but I always show coverage examples on the full reviews at the cameralabs. com website and dicuss the focal range in detail, so take a look at them before buying. That said, I'm with wombat on this and prefer having the wide angle facilities. After all, you can always crop an image to 'get closer' but you can't zoom out any wider.

i wont keep going on about the canon s51s on your fuji s8000 review.
but what i will say is that whenever i take it out with me it's for the main reason i bought it - so i can use the 12x zoom lens.
but most of the time the s51s suffices with the wide angle setting too.
and if it didn't for some reason,i'd just whip out my trusty ixus900ti which i always carry with me to see if that'd do the trick :)

Hey Gordon.
Ive got a choice of either..... Fuji Film S8100fd <<
10.1MP, 27-486mm Lens.
Or
Fujifilm S100 Pro <<
Which im most probly going to buy, 11.1MP Sensor, 27mm-400mm.

I haven't tested the S100 Pro, so can't say, but the handling of the latter looks better. I'd definitely try both in person...

hello gordon,
first, i would like to congratulate u on an awesome job testing these cameras. secondly, i was thinking of purchasing a Fujifilm Finepix F100fd. is it worth buying, or should i look for an alternate? wat i'm looking for above all is excellent image quality (rich color and sharpness)under all light conditions(i like using the iso settings too). the camera can be between 8-12 mp. or shud i look for (Panasonic:TZ5, TZ4, LX2; Canon Ixus 860 IS; Pentax A30;

i'm looking for something which fits in a similar price range as the above mentioned cameras, and offers great photos. also, the camera should last a considerable time.

Hi, I haven't tested the new Fujifilms, so can't say for sure, but the models I'd recommend right now in each category can be found in the Best Buys section at cameralabs . com...

hey gordon, i really trust ur reviews but i think u should test the Finepix F100fd. i've heard a lot of good things about it. and the image quality is said to surpass TZ5, FX500, and even the 860 IS. will u be reviewing it anytime soon? thanx. mak

I don't think you should pick up a fujifilm camera unless you want a buget camera,if you want better quality camera go for a bigger brand
like sony,panasonic,canon,samung.

hey tanhockjun,
thanks for your advise. however, i have compared the image quality of Fujis, Pentax, Canon, Sony, Panasonic Tz3s and Tz4s, and even Ricoh. Fuji, Ricoh, and Pentax had the best picture and color quality, with the most color vibrance and sharpness among all budget digital cameras.

one word of advice: go easy on the mode selector, mine gave way after two weeks and the guy said it was a common problem. when you adjust it with your thumb, make sure you turn it from side to side and you don't actually push it up is what the guy said (it does stick out a bit).
