Video Description:
There was another "Flu" game before the famous Utah game and it happened here. This version of MJ was too athletic to care about his illness. Sitting out the whole day sick, MJ came to NYC with a vengeance. The season was almost over and NY was fighting to get the 7th seed in the playoffs so the intensity was thick. MJ cut through it all with ridiculous baskets all night long. Having one of his 'super-zone' games where hitting 70-80% was the norm, MJ went 17-23 with his athletic bag of one-handed, double-pump jumpers, contorted shots, slashing drives, dunks and fades. MJ's incredible ability to hit difficult shots more consistently than most players hit open shots was beyond comprehension.
But again, it was the clutch defensive play that destroyed NY's chances of winning the game. It was the substance behind his style that always sealed the victory. Before becoming the greatest ever, MJ was the most exciting ever and Madison Square Garden never let us down.

plz stop the comparisons with jordan and kobe. kobe is the best imitator of jordan. he plays just like him but isn't as smoothe. jordan never lost in the finals while kobe was unclutch against the pistons. jordan is a legend for a reason, he gonna be remembered FOREVER.

The thing about it now is everyone is so big in the NBA now MJ wouldnt be able to get easy layups(or at least make them look so easy) everytime, people would try to smack him out of the air like they do LeBron. The only team that did that back then was the Pistons then the Knicks in the playoffs. Now damn near every team does it when they cant stop someone they just try to foul them as much as possible.

Except that the players have gotten smaller since MJ retired. Due to the shift towards perimeters (MJ's influence), gone are the big centers and football PFs. 2007 and 2008 were the 2 shortest years since the 70s. Players have also lost about 2-4lbs since MJ retired. With the tough rules back then as well, layups were truly difficult which is why they changed the rules. You have it backwards.

Watch 2:17-2:25 and see how the entire Knicks team collapses into the lane to defend against the Jordan drive despite TWO defenders already trapping him on the ball. Even when Jordan reverses direction and goes back out to the top of the key area (with two guys still on him until he gives up the ball, mind you), Ewing is camped out in the lane "just in case." Pitino, Nelson, Riley, and others used to zone up Jordan all the time -- they were just good at hiding it.

So what does Jordan do? Give and go basketball -- one of many offensive tactics Kobe was too dumb to try vs. Boston. Instead he kept trying to drive from the top of the arc against a set defense like a stubborn mule. A complete lack of basketball IQ, that.

Look at 4:05, you can see that in addition to bumping him with the body, Ewing's stiff arm across Jordan's head actually makes contact and snaps Jordan's head back as he turns the corner. Watch MJ's head closely. And then Ewing AGAIN bumps him on the shot. No call.

Kobe's a fine athlete, but Phil Jackson has NEVER stated Kobe's a better athlete than Kobe. Had he said that then Kobe fans would've kept using it in their arguments. Phil had a seat on the sidelines when MJ was in his athletic prime(88-89). He's not stupid enough to say something like that. Nobody who has ever watched 87-93 MJ would say that.

I totally agree with u. I never saw any Kobe's fans talked about give and go, it's one tactic to lose double team. But Kobe seldom, or never used it in finals.
All he knew was try to drive to basket, if failed, he then passed out or gave a mid range jumper, most of time he couldn't shoot in right time in finals. That's why he failed in finals. he just didn't have enough experience to deal with great team defense.

i remember watching this game. i could say this on almost every video on youtube, and that is how the crowd always reacted to mj. even back in 1988 he had the respect of road game crowds and they would literally jump out of their seats and cheer him on. they wanted to see him score 50, and their team win.
