Bing Crosby - White Christmas - 1942 original version- 78RPM

Uploaded by: Falcons66
Video Description:
This is the original 1942 recording of 'White Christmas', Decca number 18429. It was NOT from the box set pictures behind it. That is set A-550, which is a 1947 release, and you can hear THAT version of white christmas in my videos as well. it being played on my 1956 Philco. Here is a brief history of the song.
Bing sang "White Christmas" publicly for the first time on Christmas Day, 1941 -- on the radio (during his Kraft Music Hall show, program #243). He recorded the song in the studio on May 29th of '42. It was released as a single later that year and hit the charts in October. This was Decca 18429, backed with "Let's Start the New Year Right." The single was also available as part of the Holiday Inn set, Decca album A-306. The 78 was available on the blue-and-gold label and on the more common black-and-gold label. The single charted at #1 for 11 weeks. The black-and-gold label release was from 1945, though, because it lists the song as being from albums A-306 and A-403. A-403 was Bing's first Christmas album, known simply as Merry Christmas.
The song was re-recorded by Bing on March 19, 1947. This new version was paired with "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" as Decca 23778 in the "Personality Series." The new single charted (again) and would continue to chart every December for 20 years. The new version was also released as part of Bing's updated Christmas album (Decca A-550). When 45's were introduced two years later, "White Christmas" was released in the new format (Decca 9-23778).
In 1949, the Merry Christmas album was issued in the "long play" format (as a ten-inch LP) with the number DL-5019 and Decca's original brown label. The original cover had a light blue background and showed a large photo of Bing's head. This was the same cover design as was being used on the 78 RPM album. Copies from 1951 on have a new red-and-green front cover.
Four songs were added to the album in 1955, when it was blown up to twelve-inch size. This was when the classic cover (Bing in Santa hat) was added. The album was first released on Decca's all-black label (DL-8128), with the catalog number in the top left corner of the front cover. When stereo records were introduced, the album was also available in stereo (DL-78128). Mono copies made after the introduction of stereo have "DL-8128" in the bottom left corner of the front cover.
The song also appears on several other 1950's albums, on several EP's (ED-547, ED-2547, ED-738274, 7-34184) and was the top-selling song of all time until 1998.

Wow hang on to this one! This is the original version that they wore out the master to and had Bing come back to record it again. You can tell by the opening few bars as it starts differently. This was noted on a CD I have of his music.

You forgot to mention the reason he re-recorded it in 1947. Decca had found the master to be not useable and rushed him back into the studio to do another version using the same instruments, or as close to the original as they could come. Of course, it does not sound exactly the same. But this is the reason it was re-recorded in 1947. This other songs had no damage and were not re-recorded. But as you point out some were later added, and of course one dropped completely.
