I know what youre saying,I saw G when I lived in Portland with Lorber fusion. He is not really an advanced player, he cant improvise ,he cant swing--he is not jazz.He plays out of tune a lot--Yes I think I know my jazz-have been pianist for over 40 yrs- I studied under Earl Van Dyke in Detroit-utube him! Kenny Garrett is the real Kenny G, he is Barry Manilow with a horn. My opinion--I dont tell people what to like-I would love to hear kenny play some jazz, stretch.Utube Harry allen.

This really doesn't qualify as smooth jazz (thank god). The whole "smooth" thing came from the 80's and players like David Sanborn. I guess in a way Grover is one of the fore father of smooth jazz but I think he was coming from more of a funk vibe than a "let's play watered down, digestible jazz for the masses"... which is sadly what smooth jazz has become.

If it's for the masses, then why are the tickets so expensive? In history, some of the most "watered-down" music has been solicited by the wealthy elites(of western societies at least).

Thats a good question.. but not quite what I meant. lol Why does Kenny G. sell more than Kenny Garrett? Why is it that more people know have never heard of Charles Mingus?
The average music listener enjoys music as entertainment - not as an art form. So, the less complex music typically becomes what's more popular.
Being that artist seldom make money from sales (the record companies do) the ticket and merchandise sold from touring is how the artist actually make a living.

For many people this is there first jazz record. I was lucky enough to already had discovered Coltrane, Parker..the greats but I burned this record up. The three most influential funk jazz albums of all time has to be Headhunters, Mister Magic, and Ronnie Laws Pressure Sensitive. Any takers?
