Hey Rev, fight the good fight, carry out the Great Commission and leave the police alone. Don't antagonize them, don't bring a reproach to Christianity. You as a Christian don't have a right, Christ was innocent but allowed His captors to have their illegal way with Him. Do the same. Be an example of a good citizen and lead souls to Christ instead of fighting tiny, tiny earthly battles.

You did nothing by this protest. You are small and insignificant. And yes even protect should be orginized and have proper permits from the city. Not only do you get to protest and voice your opinion. But advaced notice usually gets a bigger crowd and larger press coverage. You have to play by some of the rules to accomplish the greater goal.
