he made A New Hope, Ep 4 initially and nothing else. After the success in '77, then he decided to make a sequel to the original, the Classic Star Wars. Of course TESB ended without a finale so ROTJ was filmed. Only years later did he decide to tell the tale of how the empire came to be was what he wanted to do to "complete" what he had started. I personally thought it was briliant. I only wished he had done it sooner, late 80s-90s.
