in my opinion the first generation ground-breaking rock artist/s in china would be:cui jian & tang dynasty.
this is a great video with a great song.the outstanding ones in second generation are:dou wei,zhang chu & he yong.
i am not a big fan of the new generation chinese indie rock music except:supermarket,the fly & some latest ambient works from dou wei.what do you guys think???

1991-1992 Tang Dynasty made several musiv video for their debut album. I watched them on StarTV (Now called PhenixTV based in HKG) on 1992 after the album was published. I remembered that they are "梦回唐朝Back to Tang Dynasty in dreams","选择choice","月梦 Moon dream","九拍 Nine beat or Nine doors","太阳 Sun","国际歌 Internationale".

And "梦回唐朝Back to Tang Dynasty in dreams" is the greatest one i have ever seen MV for Chinese Rock. It is almost an art film.But they are never published on the video tape,VCD,DVD....nothing except this one "Sun太阳". I remembered it is a director from Taiwan who made them for Magicstone Records. Who can share all of them on the internet?!??!! The videos are somewhere. Come on!

I recommend you a funk rock band named "木推瓜 Wood push melon". They only have 4 songs published in a collection album name "被侮辱的姿势 The postion being fucked". This band sounds like RHCP.They have good instrments playing skill and very poetical and critique lyrics.And most important point is their lead vocal sounds like a crazy lonely guy playing drama. Now they were disbanded.

It's very exciting to see "Wood push melon",IMHO probably the best rock band in 21st century, mentioned here. Actually there are only 3 songs in that album. The rumor is that they have 9 songs done for their unpublished album. you can find another song if you google "wood pushing melon" and "pbs" from pbs.

And I don't think they sounds like RHCP. There is another excellent chinese band "youdaoshe" 诱导社 which is more funk-rock-oriented. Wood push melon's sound is larger and more dramatical. I would categorize them as "art rock" and make a comparison to King Crimson.

It could be a world-wide hit if the language, hitorical and cultural background were understood by more than just the Chinese people.
