Soldier Forgoes Iraq For NFL, Lions Draft Caleb Campbell

Uploaded by: zennie62
Video Description:
http://zennie2005.blogspot.com - In the 7th Round of the 2008 NFL Draft a huge cheer erupted from the small-compared-to-Day-One crowd and it was for a little-known cadet who also played football for Army. Caleb Campbell, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in that last round. As that happened I talked to Dr. Bill Chackhes who gave me the details on Campbell's story. Caleb basically deferred going to Iraq as a officer after he is to graduate with the current Army class of 2008. The Army is allowing him to play in the NFL.
Everyone was enthusiastic to meet the man Bill called "The All American Boy" and this video captures that moment.

How is everyone so ... ( 2 months ago by wp0251)
How is everyone so certain that him becoming a recruiter will really help recruitment? For example, how can he effectively recruit people into the Army if he has never truly been in the Army? The bottom line is that is an excuse of a job for a West Point graduate to have just so he can play in the NFL.
It's great for him to make it into the NFL, and I applaud him for it. But having said that, he should have to serve his commitment to the Army just like every other West Point graduate.
Way to go Caleb. ... ( 2 months ago by tomcntrn)
Way to go Caleb. From half a world away and a former USMA instructor - this gives hope and example to every soldier in uniform. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, but I can tell you without doubt this is nothing but good for the Army. If your worried about your tax dollars or whose fulfilling what obligation - I recommend signing up yourself for a first hand perspective.

It wasn't like he ... ( 2 months ago by jammertime33)
It wasn't like he asked to get out of his military service. The military put this policy in place, so why shouldn't he take advantage of it if he is good enough to make the NFL? If he doesn't make the Lions' active roster, he has to go back into active duty. And there is nothing stopping him from serving after his time in the NFL.

For those of you who are not familiar with the military, I would say less then 20 % is Infantry, they have SPECIAL SERVICES, which is where the DEGREES come in. The military trains you and pays for your degree. SEE YOUR RECRITER TODAY. GO LIONSSSSSSSSSS
Your wrong. How ... ( 2 months ago by fandetsports)
Your wrong. How many people would actually sign up for the military to go and be in harms way, Their are not a hole lot of people like me and others, who do that. Most hope not to see combat, But somebody has to do it. so we can sit back and argue about it, while their there. LOVE EVERY ONE OF EM. AIRBORNE. go lionsssssssssssssssssssssssss

Right. It's totally his choice and the Army's going along with it. A true Win-Win situation.

This is one of the greatest stories that Army has seen. This helps not only the Army for recruiting and being good again, but the lions because he isn't a half bad player, and it keeps him out of Iraq. When I grow up i want to be in the military so I can see why certain parents don't like the new rule about letting him go Pro and not into combat, but this is truly one of the greatest stories ever.

this isnt right. ... ( 2 months ago by whju)
this isnt right. westpoint is one of the toughest schools to get into for 1 reason (or it used to be that way): to have leadership potential for the army of the USA. By allowing his to go and play in the NFL is a very large problem. Now academies are no longer seen as "Military" academies, since one can go there and get "drafted" into the NFL. Instead of serving his nation like he signed up to, he has gotten out of his committment, and thrown $400,000 of tax payer dollars down the toilet.
Plus, what makes ... ( 2 months ago by whju)
Plus, what makes him so different? Why aren't the rest of his classmates allowed to refrain from going and possibly dying in Iraq? Why is he allowed to live? Because he's good at football? I'm sorry if i sound heartless ladies and gentlement, but that aint right. He signed up and committed to fighting for his country. Instead, hell play in the NFL for three years, hurt himself and open a car dealership.

I am a Lion fan from way back. I am pleased to have this young man on my team. I've heard that other special skilled students are allowed to forego their tours of duty. He's not the first. They were talking about that on NPR.

Whju your a dumbass, he is still serving his country he even said the army will have him work as a recurtier, whitch is still serving the army, also this does look good for the army haveing one of their own in the NFL and personal i like the new policey army has in place so seriously WHJU STFU
Fags like this is ... ( 1 month ago by einsatzdeath)
Fags like this is why the army is turning into shit. He's self-serving and doesn't belong in the military. He even says he wants to stay in as an officer, meaning someday he'll be leading combat vets who actually served, while he'd been playing a fucking game. Worthless. Pat Tillman was a remarkable story, which I guess is why the army killed him off. This "policy" isn't policy at all. Shit is fucking retarded.
unless you have ... ( 1 week ago by scottar2010)
unless you have served dont be talking about his situation, if the army is letting him do this there is probably a good reason behind it. One of the reasons he went to west point was to play football, most of their players do get recruited to play football and then serve.
Has anyone ever ... ( 7 hours ago by murtylefspd)
Has anyone ever heard of a "once in a lifetime clause"? It means if you win the lotto or have a situation deamed once in a lifetime you get out of your service... It wasn't fair that it didn't pertain to this situation before... The Army got this one right...
