Lol, as someone who is seriously studying Kanji, I don't need a layman to tell me how many there are. If we're talking common use, at an adult reading level I'd up the number to about 3000 and technical or intellectual talk could certainly go into a higher range. Including the obscure Kanji there are certainly over 10,000.
As for Chinese, IIRC, it has upwards of 40-50,000 characters.

You got the chinese right. Theres roughly 6000 kanji. Not all are used of course. And there are about 10,000 chinese symbols.
