I have that box set. Brian is a little bit too mickey mouse for me... Carl was a very, very good singer imo. I just listened to Brian try God Only Knows with the same result.

or what Wilson/Love, Wilson/Asher, or Wilson/Christian gave them. Those are just as good.

I'll agree that Carl sounds better on God Only Knows then Brian. The Brian version of God Only Knows is a guide vocal though, don't forget.

Sure. Like I say, back then Brian knew his strengths a little better. That's why we hear such a huge difference in "Good Vibrations" from Smiley Smile vs. Smile. The former is miles ahead of the latter as far as timbre, tonality, vocal presence. Carl really owns that song, as well as a host of the BB's catalogue. I love Brian- he's great, but never the best singer (particularly lead) even in his prime.

carl is a great singer, but brian also. Cart always hits the notes perfectly but Brian have greater emotions in his voice - listen to the caroline no and i just wasnt made for this times, great examples

I think Brian was really awesome on some of them. Catch A Wave, Until I Die, Your So Good To Me, I'd Love Just Once To See You, Wouldn't It Be Nice. Carl is my favorite singer, period. Al had a very strong voice too. Mike had the twang and timbre that kind of brought the ocean to life. Dennis also had a gorgeous voice but he burned it up at very young age. Dennis was a very kind, lonely soul-got more leg than caligula. One of the most underrated drummers ever. I play a little and that SOB hit!

I think Brian had a more emotional voice, but Carl's was 'better', as many comments have said. But, listen to "You still believe in me" and see the emotion at work. Or "In My Room" or "Sloop John B"... he had a great voice, no matter what.

The truth is..is that Brian lost his high vocal range. If you see any of the concerts in the 70's and 80's He hardly sings falsetto at all. I truly believe that all of the drugs and alcohol truly ruined his vocal range. The great thing about Carl is he never lost his voice over the years. God Only Knows, and Good Vibrations are just a few examples. One good example of Brians loss in range is Hushabye. Matt Jardine took over the raines for Brian in the concerts. Code you are right Brian lost it

Al did so up until his son Matt did. Type in Brian wilson Hushabye...listen to Brian's version...then type in Matt Jardine Hushabye and listen to Matt's version. That kid really has talent

absolutley incredible, mind blowing, i always get shivers up my spine when the song comes to a close. i recently learned how to play this on piano, and i enjoy playing it as much as i enjoy listening to it. this song truly represents the pinnacle of popular music. a peak that in my opinion will remains the highest today
I ONLY DISLIKE A FEW SONGS ON SMILE - VEGA-TABLES AND DEFINETLY BARNYARD. I dont know if anybody agrees on that one

its actually not an opinion that drugs killed his beautiful voice its fact. Cocaine fried his vocal chords, nostrils, resonators etc. The greatest robbery of all. The most beautiful voice i've ever heard.

and probably all the pot too..but your right, that fucking danny hutton introduced him cocaine and that not only fucked his brain up up, but his voice.
Say..have you recognized that Brian cant seem to move the right side of his mouth these days, how did that happen?

yeah thats from the drugs too. As you probably know drugs effect the nervous system and he couldnt move the right side from about 1970 onwards. Watch the DVD beach boys (god Vibrations tour) from 1976. it showcases how talented he still was even after all the drugs. You just wanna cuddle the poor guy.

I actually have to disagree with you there. Vega-tables and Barnyard add some nice levity in between the more complex songs, and the point of the album is to make us, well... SMILE. I also like how playfully orchestrated those are.
