I sang with this choir some 25 years ago. There are many choirs who have recorded a version of this, many are here on You Tube, but none of them can hold a candle to this one in my opinion. Probably the most beatiful piece of choral music ever recorded. Absolutely sublime. S. This is about as good as choral music gets.

Absolutly, agree with you. Also look with recording Henry Purcell 'The Complete Anthems ans Services'(11 CD) and past 2 year 'Messiah', version 1751. The musical concept with Edward Higginbottom is at same appreciation as Beethoven. From UK, I appreciat 2 Boys Choir: New College and Westminster Cathedral.

Je suis allé à New College, pour un échange entre les groupes de choeur (je viens de Caen, où j'y ai appris le clavecin, avec une canadienne, d'ailleurs :)). J'ai assisté à 1 semaine de concerts complets: leur rigueur est militaire, mais quel resultat!!!

À la bonheur, serais-ce la Maîtrise de Caen? Si c'est le cas cette formation a aussi de la rigueur dans son approche. Cyrille Dubois a été un modèle connu publiquement. J'ai posté(2 je crois) des extraits de la Maîtrise sur Youtube, d'ailleurs je suis le seul lol Dommage, elle mérite d'être connue. Voilà cette chance que tu as eu, dans ces formations c'est toute une aventure pour un jeune qui veut, pas seulement sur la musique, mais en retirer une belle histoire de sa vie, dure mais essentielle.

J'étais bien à la maitrise de Cane, meme promotion que C. Dubois (meme classe, de 1992 à 1999!). Nous avons été formé par un Anglais, R. Weddle, qui reste un maître pour moi. Les anglais restent cependant les meilleurs. Dans le CD "maitrise de Caen et Festin Baroque" (1998-99), nous avons essayé d'obtenir un résultat comparable, mais c'est impossible... :) nous ne sommes que des français! :)

Je ne crois pas que ce soit une question de nationalité, mais plus concernant l'approche du maître. Dans le documentaire L'Or des Anges(je recommande) Dionysy Placzkowski de la formation Polskie de Pologne disait qu'il n'était pas habitué à l'approche de Higginbottom très différente de son chef. Cependant, comme tu dis, il y a un long héritage historique et culturel venant des Britanniques, un son bien à eux depuis des lustres. Laisse un petit français au main de chef,on y verra la différence.

This is the best recording of this piece. It is nice to have this modern music with a Christian theme that has been treated well in early music. The story and the music have always made for good theatre. This piece ended up in the movie Platoon to add merit to the glorification of war. I know that Barber was commissioned by the US Air Force to write a piece in the middle part of the last century. So, what? Music to fry another two or three hundred thousand by.
