Its a National disgrace that this was taken off the air, it should be played every night just before the "through the night" programmes start. It expresses the State - I'd gladly vote to remove the Angelus if the anthem was restored!!!

I agree, RTE should show it again each night. However it must be this actual video. It has a real vintage charm to it while still expressing the continuing ethos of the nation. Knowing how things are these days they'd probably make a new one with scenes of the big spire in Dublin and the like and also change the music.

Very, very evocative of my childhood. As much an affirmation with our love affair with television as our obvious pride in our country.
I remeber my father coming in late from the pub, horsing drunk, and making myself and my brothers stand to attention for this. Funny looking back on it.
There was also that terrible realisation when it was over that it really was time to go to bed. Imagine, television closing down!!
With nothing else to do is it any wonder families back then were so big?
