Elway wouldn't have won with Dwight Clark and Freddie Solomon? What are you talking about? Do you know who his main receivers were in the 80's? Mark Jackson and Vance Johnson. And he led them to 3 Super Bowls with those two. I would take Clark and Solomon over those two anyday. And, Montana's TE's with those guys were Charle Young and then Russ Francis, who were better than Clarence Kay, Elway's main TE in the 80's.

Montana was over ... ( 4 months ago by forty9erlou)
Montana was over rated??? I guess you know more than the players that played against him, and all the experts that call Joe one of the greatest QB's of all time. Elway was a great QB also, as was Dan Marino during that era..but Joe was just one step above them. That final TD drive in the 1988 SB against the Bengals showed his poise and command in the biggest game of the year. And in 1986 no one was going to stop that Giants team. The Niners were going thru a transition and were not as good as NY.
Did the Broncos ... ( 4 months ago by forty9erlou)
Did the Broncos even win any of those SB's??? The AFC in those days was inferior to the NFC, and as I recall the Broncos got beat worse each time they went to the Superbowl. The Broncos faced a tough Giants, Redskins, and 49er team who all had great defenses. Elway could have had Duper and Clayton and still lost to those teams.

Don't get me wrong, I think that Montana was pretty good, and he belongs in the Hall, but I think that he gets more credit because his teams won 4 Super Bowls. As the saying goes, the QB gets more credit when you win, and more blame when you lose. If there was ever a QB that the first part of that statement applied to besides Tom "Shady" Brady, it was Montana. And, I agree, that drive in SB23 was great, but not better than Elway's drive in Cleveland because it was on the road.
How can you compare ... ( 4 months ago by forty9erlou)
How can you compare a drive to win a Championship game to a drive to win the Superbowl? I have to disagree with you here. Joe drove them the length of field to win the biggest game of the year. And what about the drive in the 1981 Championship game that ended in "The Catch"?
Because the drive ... ( 4 months ago by a7b7c78)
Because the drive Elway had was on the road in front of hostile, dog bone throwing maniacs. Montana's was in the SB, but it was against a weaker defense. And, I give the credit for the drive in the 81 NFC Championship to Walsh, not Montana, because of his impeccable play calling. One more point: If Drew Pearson would have scored or got into range for a field goal on the next series(which he almost did) and Dallas would have won, Montana would not be held in as high regard today.

Yea. If you compare ... ( 3 months ago by seanknew)
Yea. If you compare their college careers!!!!! C'mon, Troy doesn't hold a candle to both Montana or Young. Troy look like crap after he lost Jay Novacek, his offense line, and Norv Turner. Steve lost Mike Shanahan, Jerry Rice in the 1997 season, and his protection in the early part of 1994. And still was a great QB. Troy Aikman has the arm and athlectism over Montana, but Montana was better at reading D, the smarter QB, and always knew where everyone was on offense.
Are you shitting me ... ( 3 months ago by ishmaiden)
Are you shitting me? Joe has 4 NFL rings and a NCAA championship, idiot. Troy never threw for more than 23 Td's in a season and only had a dozen or so more TD's than INTS. Joe Had twice as many TD's vs. Ints and had 20 rushing td's. You're a complete fool.

hAHAHA Aikman was just a guy in the right place at the right time, anybody could've been a Pro-bowl QB behind that 90's Dallas O-line. -Just look at Aikman's first couple of years in Dallas, what a joke.

the only knock on ... ( 2 months ago by kingkongthewonder)
the only knock on Troy Aikman is that he had a big dick. it used to slow him down in the games. other than that problem, he could play for anybody and lead them to the superbowl. just face it, he was that good.

Steve Young ... ( 1 month ago by joem49er)
Steve Young overcame adversity. Inspirational. I think there's 2 types of people:
1.) Joe Montana (everybody likes you; you can do no wrong)
2.) Steve Young (you're viewed as a red-headed step-child; no matter what you do you'll never be viewed as good enough)
Is Steve Young a great QB? Yes.
Is Steve Young better than Joe Montana? No. But Steve is o.k. with his accomplishments. Winning Super Bowl XXIX and being MVP validated his spot as one of the game's greats.
