You must know that all of this was basically improvisation? Casals was the one who took the suites out of the etude bin and put them into the standard repertoire! He was the first to ever do that, which is why he is so amazing.

Even though I play the suites in the baroque style I am so drawn to Casals.
It's more than cellistic considerations. It is bigger than just playing them. I think it's the difference between playing Bach and living Bach.
Casals lived Bach.

Truly mind blowing. To see and hear the emotion he put into that piece was pure genius. How lucky we are to be able to watch the Master at our fingertips. What a privilege.

Thanks for putting this up, Twotea. It is moving to see the man playing what I have loved listening to for so long.
If you read Casals autobiographies (including "Joys and Sorrows" you will realise that he preferred to be called "Pau", rather than "Pablo" (Joys and Sorrows, 1970, p. 154).

Casals reluctantly accepted "Pablo" because that's how he had been known when he first became known as a child musician, but when he started his own orchestra, he made sure it was called the "Pau Casals Orchestra" and not "Pablo Casals".
We can be sure he would be delighted to be called "Pau".

Ah kavalier! Read more about Casals and you will realise that he would never have dreamt of separating his music from the rest of his humanity, including the love of justice and freedom, that made him hate fascism and led him to make such efforts to ensure that his music could be heard by the poor people of Catalonia.

It's a shame we can't let the music be the music and leave it with that.
How we call the musician? I think it is quite irrelevant. Maybe Pablo wanted to be called Pau.
I think it is not about Pablo/Pau. It is about how Johann Sebastian moves our emotions.
Shame on you for letting Pablo/Pau and Catalan/Spanish politics defile the wonderous sounds of Johann Sebastian Bach!

Maedhir,
Is it only about Johann Sebastian? Doesn't Pau Casals play any part in making those wondrous sounds? And if he does, don't we gain by seeing all the dimensions of the man who mad such music?

It's like seeing Sophocles dance and sing. Pau Casals' performances stand at the core of European cultural history.

Emocionante, con ese color desnudo de la piedra, el sonido de la madera y las cuerdas, esa mano izquierda de Pau Casals tan cercana a su cara. Y la musica de J.S.Bach, nunca a vuelto a ser-sonar asi. Gracias, maestros.
