Techno Vs. Techno Series: Shoreditch [2008]
Uploaded by: MuratBulutAysan
Video Description:
Techno vs. Techno: East London
My ongoing Techno vs. Techno series aims to explore the mechanisms behind, and implications of, the rapid urban regeneration -- re-gentrification -- which has been taking place in East London since the 1980's. Anyone visiting Brick Lane can now witness first-hand the power of such transformations. The cycle of squatter's and artists populating a down-trodden inner-city district, only to make it 'trendy' and suddenly attractive for investment is a documented but often unheard story.
This performance has me (the DJ) playing loud, cutting-edge Techno music* to current active East London Line railway construction sites**. This is both a disco and a voice against the noisy clamour of greedy construction -- thus my disco must, as the antagonist, be both free and openly-accessible (weather permitting).
My interest here lies with the way that Techno/Rave culture isolates people (especially the young) from school/work/stress thanks to it's escapist qualities. As we see, it is this 'escapist-generation' who refuse to acknowledge, or are isolated from the threats which our planet is facing at the moment. England has the highest teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse rates in Europe at the moment, a heavily-criticised school system, two Wars on it's hands, a generation of Debt-ridden students, all of these factors combined do not paint a grand picture of a confident and forward thinking young demographic. Sadly, it is this same generation who probably couldn't tell you what urban re-gentrification is, but would happily shop in it. Let alone Iraq, no one even has a real clue as to what's going on in their own lands.
So, this is England, and so we shall speak English (to get the subtle points across perhaps?) - Next time I'll bring out the glow-sticks!
*I use a laptop running Traktor 3 DJ software, a USB DJ mixer and some battery-powered speakers to achieve this. All tracks are bought high-quality, DRM-free from Beatport.com
**The East London version of this performance took place directly in front of Transport for London's (TfL) new East London Line construction sites in London's Borough of Hackney, specifically at one point in Dalston and in a small park adjacent to Brick Lane.
Future Update:
A bizarre way in which this piece could develop would be to professionally transform this performance into a proper 'Club-Night', except the night would be held not in typical, derelict warehouses or posh/seedy/trendy clubs/pubs/bars -- no, they would be hosted in such a place as to make one think and go 'omg I can't believe I am clubbing here!!!' - such as an Oil Factory/Rig, Military Base, Petrol Station, Prison, Meat Packing Factory, or a similar, disconcerting, hidden place.
