You know that Ernest Tidyman, the Creator of the "Shaft" novels wrote The French Connection which won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Tidyman was on a roll in the early 70's.
There are six Shaft novels with two that were turned into movies. Shaft In Africa was the only movie that wasn't a novel.
The opening sequence is historic. There will never be an opening sequence to top that.

WOW! NYC in 1971. HAIR was playing on Broadway, Gas prices were affordable, and DISCO was the in thing. Then came SHAFT! (Right on!) The film itself was no blockbuster hit, but a famous song came of it. :)
