JFK Inaugural Address 1 of 2

Video Description:
President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address, January 20th 1961.
Vice President Johnson, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chief Justice, President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, President Truman, reverend clergy, fellow citizens, we observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom — symbolising an end, as well as a beginning — signifying renewal, as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago.
The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe — the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.
We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans — born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage — and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.
This much we pledge and more.
To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do — for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder.
To those new States whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. We shall not always expect to find them supporting our view. But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom — and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.
To those peoples in the huts and villages across the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required — not because the Communists may be doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.
To our sister republics south of our border, we offer a special pledge — to convert our good words into good deeds — in a new alliance for progress — to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty. But this peaceful revolution of hope cannot become the prey of hostile powers. Let all our neighbours know that we shall join with them to oppose aggression or subversion anywhere in the Americas. And let every other power know that this Hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house.
To that world assembly of sovereign states, the United Nations, our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace, we renew our pledge of support — to prevent it from becoming merely a forum for invective — to strengthen its shield of the new and the weak — and to enlarge the area in which its writ may run.
Finally, to those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction.
We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.
But neither can two great and powerful groups of nations take comfort from our present course — both sides overburdened by the cost of modern weapons, both rightly alarmed by the steady spread of the deadly atom, yet both racing to alter that uncertain balance of terror that stays the hand of mankind's final war.
So let us begin anew — remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.
Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belabouring those problems which divide us.
Let both sides, for the first time, formulate serious and precise proposals for the inspection and control of arms — and bring the absolute power to destroy other nations under the absolute control of all nations.

GotNextVideo,
Obama had to move to the center to get elected. Let's see if he stays there. McCain's lack of a conservative ideological stance cost him the election. BTW, IMO, Clinton was a joke.

I know people sometimes like to project their beliefs onto others, or just believe in their "team" but every bit of polling suggests that it was actually McCain's aligning himself with the right and especially with Sarah Palin, that cost him the most votes.

Reagan was a good president, and is considered a good president by most historians. I am afraid you are being biased.
I am not going to be biased here. I think JFK was a good president too. I am a republican btw. It's not about whether you are a republican or a democrat. It's about whether or not you did a good job as president. And although JFK had a very short time in the white house, he balanced the budget, prevented WWIII, and represented almost every American.
But please do not ... ( 5 days ago by Pella5000)
But please do not dis-credit Reagan. He said he was going to lower taxes, he did. He said that he would combat communism. The wall fell after he left. He said he would invest in improving our defense...we have the best equipment in the world today. and he said he would make sure inflation would be lowered...When he entered office in 1980 the CPI index was 13.5 by 84 it went down to 4.3 and by the time he left office it went down to 4.1

And I shall give credit where I think it's due...I think out of all the presidential inaugural speeches....JFK had the cream of the crop

Reagan was a decent President, but not great......he brought the nation out of recession after Carter, but he also ran up the national debt to insane levels......and he didnt end the Cold War - that was Gorbachev.......and let's not forget Iran-Contra scandal......JFK was much greater than Reagan........CASE CLOSED.

-The national deficit was approx. 2.6% of the U.S. GNP when Reagan entered office, and only 2.8% of the GNP when he left
(Congressional Budget Office)
He didn't raise it to insane levels. Congress out spent more than he proposed to be spent.

And in regards to the cold war, by letting private sector run the US economy, he dumped all the tax money that was used into weapons spending and basically outspent the the Russians 10-1, The communist system of the USSR went broke trying to catch up our country. Most historians give credit to Reagan for speeding up the end of the cold war. Not to mention he restored the pride and confidence in this country when it had none.
Reagan did what had to be done.

But you also have to remember that Kennedy also started to dabble in Vietnam before his assassination, but you will never hear anything about that. Then you got the Bay of Pigs invasion. The involvement with Italian mafia, Marylin Monroe...Kennedy was not exactly pure in his image but all the bad things of administration is overshadowed by his tragic death. Kennedy was a good president, I can't say he was great though. He was hardly in office for 3 years.

Reagan quadrupled the national deficit from the time he took office in 1981 until 1989 when he left.....if you think that's good fiscal policy then you need mental help.......Reagan made America paper-thin......the only President to outdo Reagan in ballooning the national debt during his term in office is George W. Bush.
Most historians ... ( 4 days ago by Hunkola)
Most historians agree that Russia was rapidly bankrupting itself because of the economic failures of communism......the Cold War arms spending was just icing on the cake and Reagan just happened to be around at the right time to take the credit......typical Republican chest-thumping......Reagan didnt give America pride or confidence in itself......the nation was coming out of the late 70's recession and there again, Reagan was just lucky to be in office when it happened.
Kennedy had his ... ( 4 days ago by Hunkola)
Kennedy had his weaknesses (ie, fucking Monroe) but his legacy has done a greater amt. of good for American history than Reagan could ever dream......the Peace Corps was the seed of global philanthropy and volunteerism that we see thriving today in things like the Gates Foundation......plus JFK had the right strategy for Vietnam and would have won the war but LBJ and Nixon fucked it up......50 yrs. from now, history will still fondly recall JFK's impact and Reagan will still be a small footnote.

Let's agree to disagree.. Even though I think Reagan and Kennedy are on the same level, Personally.

Your choice.....but the fact that most historians would rank JFK a greater President than Reagan speaks for itself.....Kennedy prevented global nuclear armageddon with the Cuban Missile Crisis and that is proof alone of how great of a President he was......his level of achievement in a short 2.5 yrs. in office is testament to his leadership skills......however, Obama is showing signs of being a great President like JFK and the world is backing him already with unprecedented support.

how can we seriously say that in two years a man was able to prove himself has a great president, no disrespect to the man, but i think that we often label him as a great president because of his speeches seeing has was able to only serve 1/2 have a term

why jfk?
1.JFK wanted the government to print its own interest-free currency, backed by silver, thereby by-passing the Federal Reserve debt-based currency system through Executive Order 11110
2. he wanted the CIA to cease selling and importing drugs to the American people.
3. he ordered a plan outlining the process of the public dissemination of information on extraterrestrial visitation.
4. he stated his intention to disband the CIA and to scatter it in a thousand different directions.

WHOA....hold on a second there. Let's not compare President-Elect Obama (who has yet to take office) to one of the greatest Presidents in our history. Please, JFK had twice the charisma of Obama and was more accomplished than Obama when he was FOUR YEARS YOUNGER than the President-Elect. At age 43, he was already a war hero and had served longer in the Senate than the President-Elect. I agree, President-Elect Obama looks to have potential, but never I think will there be another like JFK. RIP.

Remember only two and a half years in office and he stopped a nuclear armaggedon from happening on earth (Cuban Missile Crisis). I doubt Obama would have the backbone to stand up to the leader of the communist world the way JFK did.
