The surf was ruined in the 70's 80's when they DREDGED the fu*k out of the beach, killing the surf.

It's good to see Rockaway as a place of interest again.. In the 80's it was sliding downhill. Hopefully with the infusion of "hipsters" will come an infusion of cash & new businesses. I just hope they keep it a beach town--when building, stick with the the old Rockaway vibe-- vs. the crap "10 family houses" springing up all over the place (i.e. former Playland site). Make it a place to move back to!

Actually that is 1000% true. I lived out there in the 70's. I lived in 8600 and I can tell you that dogs did indeed run in packs and if you we're out about early in the morning you better of had eyes in back of your head. Im not kidding it was bad.

now that is very true. i live in fort lauderdale and have been out to the island a number of times but always wanted to go back to rockaway and sit in on my favorite rock where i'd fish all morning. bch 92nd was the beach i started surfing at 8 years old. great memories.

Wow, Beach 92nd is my spot. I always get off at beach 90, and walk to beach 92nd. That's my favorite body-boarding, and surfing spot. I always go on the rocks too, and just watch the waves splash high against it.

I lived on 117th ST. back in the 70's and early 80's. We surfed back then year round. I can't recall any packs of dogs but there were homeless people who lived on the beach. One of whom I and my friends befriended. He was an old guy who went by the name 'Hawaiian John', he had problems with alcohol but he had a good heart. I'll never forget the day I watched two NYC cops meet him with night sticks in a parking lot adjacent to Walbaum's grocery store off of 116th. THEY were a pack of dogs.
