"You ask me what I think of the expediency of encouraging our States to become commercial. Were I to indulge my own theory, I wish them to practise neither commerce or navigation, but to stand with respect to
Europe precisely on the footing of China." -- Thomas Jefferson
People lives ... ( 10 months ago by DanMorin007)
People lives wealthy when they have the following: private ownership of the means of production; voluntary exchanges; no "institutional interference" with how prices and wages are set. It is NOT free trade when WTO/government/politicians set the rules of trade. People should be free to trade with another without interference.

The Free trade ... ( 7 months ago by seneca67)
The Free trade agreements have always been for the exploitation of cheap labor, and not much else. Free trade is not working for me. I am sick of the mass layoff at every company i end up working for.

the problem you see is this, there arent enough resources on this earth for EVERYONE to be welathy. in the last five years the world was being flooded with dollar, making the currency cheaper, and making commodities more expensive. Free trade advocates forget to mention this primary fact.

There is plenty of room for wealth creation by stopping wars, destruction and waste. Most of the resources on Earth are unused because of political control.
"Free trade advocates forget to mention this primary fact."
I am a free trade advocate and recognize this and I am not alone. Those however who lobby for "free trade" are in fact lobbying for "restricted trade" to protect their market with tariffs and quotas.

You are arguing from theory. Most of the world's oil reserve is tapped, and we know unless a huge reserve is found, or technology comes to improve our current energy consumption, the world's economies will run low on oil. Not to mention what is happening to food prices in the last year. Offer prove that the Earth has enough resource to make the majority of the population prosperous.

and btw, if history teaches us anything, there will always be war and corrupt politics. in that climate, free trade is horrible.

So if a company can get cheaper labor overseas it should not go there? Even when this brings the price of the products go down and the abundance of the products go up? Even when MNCs on average pay quite a bit higher than local averages?
Has outsourcing on ... ( 7 months ago by seneca67)
Has outsourcing on the basis of labor brought prices down? Have American Businesses gained reciprocal access to foreign markets? Has China respected international law regarding intellectual property? I am glad to know the Multi nationals are paying a few extra rupees, pesos, or yuan for their labor, but are the pat rates remotely comparable to Western standards? Is the current system racing to the lowest denominator?
I would suggest a ... ( 7 months ago by seneca67)
I would suggest a conditional tariff imposed on companies that lay off American workers and outsource to cheaper labor markets, unless they can show parity in compensation. Access to the most lucrative consumer market in the world should carry the responsibility of honoring the social progress of that market. After all, if our American labor markets are on a par with the third world, what would become of the consumer markets? Why not motivate the other markets to increase standards?
The great economic ... ( 6 months ago by mujaku)
The great economic historian Paul Bairoch concluded that growth [protectionism] promotes trade expansion, not the reverse, and finds a positive association between protectionism and faster economic growth. He also said free trade policies lead to DEPRESSIONS whereas protectionism lead to RECOVERIES. We are entering a global depression period.

If jobs are lost in ... ( 1 month ago by jhaag)
If jobs are lost in the US to oversees workers, this is a signal that American workers are in the wrong industry. With proper retraining, these job losses would be temporary and these workers would relocate to jobs in industries of comparative advantage. Also, there are plenty of cases of wages increasing in developing countries.
No, it's a signal ... ( 1 month ago by jocamadad)
No, it's a signal that U.S. trade policy is a failed policy and needs to be restructured. For example, we need to force countries that limit the amount of goods we can sell in their countries, like Japan and S. Korea, to open their markets or stop trading with them. The same goes for countries, like China, that manipulate their currencies to keep the price of their products lower than our domestic products. We should also put tariffs in place to offset the difference in wage scale.
You should ask why ... ( 2 weeks ago by RamandoDMag)
You should ask why this labor is cheaper. Many companies move to areas where the standard of living is significantly lower than here in the U.S. Would you like to make 25% (made up that up) of your salary doing the same job? Understand that these people in the third world are breaking their backs so we can watch TV.

I think this video is biased towards free trade. Free trade is great for corporations, horrible for the 3rd world.

You are so right Eagle, free trade in present form is being driven by Political Internationalism not any loyalty to ones own country. These international bankers consider themselves to be citizens of the world, they are not loyal to any country.
Is it the ... ( 2 weeks ago by louiethegreater)
Is it the responsability of the American Middleclass to build consumer markets for Multinational Corperations? The comparative advantage of the third world is cheap .40/hr cheap unregulated labor. H1B visas are being used to fill jobs being created by high tech industries; not retrained American Workers. 1.2 billion workers in China, over a billion in India and Indonesia, there is Zero chance of wages increasing anytime soon.

free trade forces companies to pursue the lowest common denominator of behavior, Increases reliance on fossil fuels and generally suppresses wages of rich and poor nations. Support fair trade Try to buy Local and buy used. Try to Reject predatory capitalism.
