The 1998 Longhorn visit to Lincoln on Halloween Day will go down as one of the biggest upsets in the 1990s as Texas was a 21 point underdog in a stadium where the Huskers had not lost since 1991 (to Washington, the eventual MNC). NU, the defending college champions and #6 in the BCS, had won 47 straight home games which was one of the longest streaks in NCAA history.
One thing about Texas football: the Horns can compete very well against teams that are ground based, hence the perfect 7-0 record vs. Alabama and the near perfect record vs. Corn over the last 12 years. It's when UT has to go vs. sophisticated passing attacks that the Horns fall such as in 1998 UCLA, TTech and KSU -- the only 3 losses.
Look at this stat (Huskers, confirm): NU won 47 in a row, lose to UT, win another 26 consecutive home games and lose to UT again. That's a 73-2 record with UT the nemesis. Imagine a 75 home streak. UT wins in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2006 with a loss in 1999 CCG. Looks like UT has Corn figured out and with the hosses Texas brings, I think UT 2005 takes the 1995 Huskers. Texas kids know the ground game and can take the NU or Bama ground attacks very nicely and do it better.
Trivia: UT db/lb Lee Jackson is the only opposing player to win in Lincoln twice since 1991, is this correct? Heck you may have to go back to the 1960s to find another one like him. Huskers, can you confirm?
With a Defensive Line featuring Hampton, Rogers, Woodard and Humphrey (all 4 NFLers) -- Texas was not going to get manhandled by the always top notch NU front 5. In addition, Anthony Hicks played one of the best games I have ever seen for a Texas LB with steady and fundamentally sound reads and reacts throughout the game, reminding of Britt Hager.
First Half:
Opening drive saw some power runs by Ricky with a good mix of passes as UT looked very focused. A questionable PI call in UT's favor set up the pass to Derek Lewis for a 7-0 lead. UT Defense held NU and Hicks had a great sack on NU starting QB Monte Christo (who was a walk-on and Eric Crouch on the bench).
UT gets the ball back and Ricky rumbles for 38 yards, has another run with a big hit from NU all American DB Mike Brown # 21. Nice catches by Kwame and Wane keeps the drive alive. Another questionable PI call (certainly a makeup call), offensive on Derek Lewis, pushes UT back. After a pass to the endzone fails to hit paydirt, UT -- Kris Stockton hits a FG for a 10-0 lead.
I threw in an old school Frank Solich highlight.
NU drives with Christo passes but on a critical 3rd down, Hicks comes up big again and sacks Christo. NU shanks a FG and score remains 10-0.
Both defenses step up with hard hits and stops. UT's Stockton also punts and lands a beauty at the 2 yard line with great coverage. NU then drives almost the full field with Crouch looking like Bucky Richardson and a nice screen mixed in. However, UT defense steps up big again with Shaun Rogers sacking Crouch. Yet another PI call, a second one against UT, puts NU in range for a FG, 10-3 UT at the half.
