My fav movies with Paul Newman = Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Hud, The Long Hot Summer, Someone Up There Likes Me, Torn Curtain, and this, Cool Hand Luke. I saw him once, about 10 years ago while working in Michaels of Westport. What a BEAUTIFUL man! Even at 70+. You wouldn't believe how blue his eyes were! Incrediable actor, remarkable person. He will be missed forever. Thank you Paul Newman for your movies and all the wonderful memories.

The best interactive scene in this great movie is between Luke and his mom ... each knowing it would be the last time they ever spoke to each other. You could see where Luke got his cool by the way his mom was dying inside but still retaining her dignity and sense of self.

May I add that the time was of civil unrest. Whilst Rod Steiger's role was a great performance, but politics and current affairs, which I think influenced the decision(no doubt with good intentions) shouldn't override acting ability.
