just had to jump in here. Very refreshing to hear such intelligent views. This Quintet was one of the greatest rhythm sections ever assembled. The roles of Tony Williams and Herbie Hancock defines the sound to me. This is light years from your local jazz lounge players during covers.

It takes a certain paradigm shift to appreciate this music. They're not lost in themselves, they're lost in concentration; in the creation of a new music, one note, one beat at a time. This is what we love best about jazz. Each song will be different the next time it is played, and each quintet will be different the next time it is conceived. Think about the parameters of music they are stretching. To me, witnessing the concentration involved is relaxing as listening to Blue in Green.

Absolutely... One of the things that sometimes gets overlooked about Miles. He was great but had a knack for discovering great talent. The list is impressive. Shorter, Hancock, Carter, Corea, etc, etc, etc

this is my favorite band...across all genres and years. I'm trying to think of a band that I like better but can only come up with bands that I still don't think are in this quintet's league IMO....and I listen to every kinda music I can get my hands on.

Yes, Petrucciani is a great player, but Miles & this great "Second Quintet" [as well as the other musicians who went thru Miles' band in the 60's, i.e. Jarrett, Zawinul, Corea, et al] pretty much wrote the 'post-bop' playbook that just about everyone who came after them had to refer to....
