Eric Andersen performs Thirsty Boots at Phil Ochs Memorial

Uploaded by: Fulci06
Video Description:
On May 28, 1976, at the Felt Forum in New York City, a memorial concert was held in honor of Phil Ochs who had committed suicide on April 9, 1976. Eric Andersen performs his classic song Thirsty Boots with great poignancy, it is quite touching. Other performers at the Memorial Concert included Pat Sky, Dave Van Ronk, Melanie, Bob Gibson, Jim Glover, Oscar Brand,Tim Hardin, and Peter Seeger. The concert was five and a half hours long but only 90 minutes was shown on public television in 1977.
As I watched and listened to the various performances, I couldn't help but feel a sadness, not only for Phil Ochs, but due to the loving tributes from these performers who truly played their hearts out. The musicians were truly sincere in their respect and admiration for Ochs. What a difference from the superficiality of most tributes for musicians today!

Eric Andersen is still recording and performing. His songs are textured, insightful, and, sometimes, downright erotic. Check out "Ghosts Upon The Road".

When my son was in kindergarten, he asked to come along to see Eric at Folk City. We sat center stage. He was waiting for Thirsty Boots & disappointed that it never came. We told him to holler for it as an encore (teach your children) & he did. Eric said, "Aren't you a little young to know that song?" Matt replied that he knew all the words. After the show, Andersen chatted very sweetly with him & gave him an autographed tape. (And my son is a political activist today)

This is a lovely rendition by the composer, but it still strikes me as banal and derivative. It is Dylan lite due to the self-serving alliterative lyrics and heroic pretensions that would not pass were they not presented by the pretty boy.

In the video response I submitted, pay particular attention to two men standing behing two Dallas Police Officers ( 1 minute 31 seconds) one of the men is Phil Ochs legendary folk singer who was sent to Dallas as an observer. There is another You Tube video called TEXAS SCHOOL BOOK DEPOSITORY that will support this film. Phil Ochs was later found dead of an apparent hanging suicide. I wonder.....
