Developed by Fujifilm and currently being used for blood filtration and regulating the growth of neural stem cells, Honeycomb Film is a thin polymeric film with hexagonally arranged micro-pores.
"Honeycomb film is processed using a self-organization method. The material contains a lot of air so it's very soft. Even though it is porous, the pores are even-sized, ranging in size from 3 to 10 microns, the honeycomb film can be made from various materials and it has a film pressure of 5 to 10 microns. We have developed this thin film manufacturing process and technology in conjunction with Professor Shimomura of Tohoku University. This film is currently being used for medical purposes and for biotechnological related research, but we are currently promoting the features of this material to encourage its use in various other disciplines not relating to medical or biotechnology fields."
The film is formed by condensing water droplets on the surface of a polymer solution, the water droplets become packed and evenly spaced and the solvent and water is then evaporated leaving the honeycomb structure. Utilizing this process, the Honeycomb film can be made from a range of materials including plastics, resins and polymers including metals and metal oxides. Other proposed applications include field emission devices, tissue engineering, super water repellant surfaces, fuel cells and high density memory materials. Fujifilm are currently undergoing a trial marketing period.
