I am new Miles' music, but I don't understand why there are so many negative comments about Gary Bartz's playing. He seems to be pretty damn good; he tore it up especially hard at the Isle of Wight.

Sorry ekalen6, I was only attempting to disprove a European friend's assertion that Americans are beligerent, humorless, and utterly lacking in charm.

Ummmm...not so sure about NDdugu being funkier for Miles than Jack. After all JACK did play on the "On the Corner" sessions AFTER what we see in this video. Also, let's not forget that Miles FIRED Ndugu...who wasn't with the band for very long anyway.

Let's also not forget that Jack was not the primary drummer on "On the Corner" - that was Billy Hart. Jabali played most of the main beats and Jack did most of the hi-hat and colors. Jack was never particularly tight - in the R&B/Soul sense - that Billy Hart, Ndugu, OR Al Foster was. But I think it was Jack's looseness that made his brand of funk so special. But you're also right, Miles didn't dig Ndugu all that much.

the thing is man, you listen to jack's grooves like on live-evil, while stoned, his funkiness really shows; jack just uses the other parts of the kit at will to generate his funk

This music is not from 1971 but from 1970 when Miles had Jarrett and Chick Corea Keyboards and Dave Holland on Bass.
In 1971 Michael Henderson was the Bass player and Chick and Dave split to play with Anthony Braxton. Jack is just TOO MUCH!

This is almost beyond reality. It stems out of the great great great Bitches Brew, one of the most significant albums in history. All the layers of sounds, the mixture of complex elements with the hypnotic groove. This music takes your mind to a level of abstraction and enjoyment where the nuisances of our predictable lives become completely meaningless.
