Oh, I have no quarrel with what you say about the emotional content. I'm just stating a preference for the more traditional approach for this type of song "in this place," as you out it. But I am not the man with the instrument. I think there is room in the realm of great music by superior artists for both renditions. also think that if Tony had decided that a traditional interpretation was what his mood dictated, I have no doubt it would be among the best. I simply wish he had.

i think you're absolutely right in saying that tony's take on this song is no longer really shenandoah proper, but rather a brand new song by tony rice wich uses the melody of the original as a sort of guideline. i think you're wrong in saying it lacks poignancy or depth of feeling though; its just not the exact same as the original. instead, its tony's depth, its his poignancy, in the same way that it's his take. i think its even more poignant just because its coming straight from him.

Everything about this piece amazes me. From the melody and chords to the "hybrid picking". I never knew about this man until now and I'm glad I know him now.

But for some reason I really loved 2006 at greyfox. FOr one thing the people I camp with have several huge shelters so ran is less of a problem. Im gonna miss that hill. 2008 greyfox was just unbearable heat. The secret of the place was that if you walked uphill away from the stage it was real real nice.

Its amazing to me how we can have the brilliance of this guitar player showing how an instrument is supposed to be played and yet all we have on the radio is amatuers banging out simple power chords and calling it music.

Not trying to argue. I think you are correct. I think we should respect this type of talent even more because of the lack of it. There are thousands of pickers out there. But few of this caliber.

Now, if you all had listened to the video until it's end you would have heard Tim O'Brian saying that art gives you a chance to "be quiet and, under the guise of enjoyment, think about the important things in life". So, why all the arguing about which version is right and which is wrong? Who is more poingnant and soulful? Good God...listen to this man play and think about how lucky we are that people like Tony Rice can recieve such a gift and give it back to listeners like us!

I am 20 years old. A girl, whom you wouldn't originally expect to like this type of music. And even though my favorite artists are people like Michael Jackson, Prince, SRV, John Mayer and Eric Clapton, Tony Rice's music still reigns true in my heart. My father raised me on his music and many other types of bluegrass so it will stick with me for the rest of my life! His style is like none other. To this day I do wish he could still sing, but I can never live without his playing!

It's a 1935 Martin D-28 - plain fingerboard and headstock - simple beauty and elegance.
Now, with Tony behind it, it takes on another level of brilliance.

I don't want to be too pedantic, but I reckon that's actually Tony's signature model Santa Cruz guitar, which is based on the old Martin shape. Either way, a killer instrument, and a KILLER instrumentalist.

I remain SURE it a '35 D-28 - check out the finish on the headstock at 1:07 - that's 73 year old varnish.
