How it all began
The concept for "THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF MR. STICKMAN" began in 1991 when I lived on the 6th floor of Pomerantz Hall at Brandeis. I often hung out with people on the 2nd Floor and it was there that the initial foundation of Mr. Stickman began. Another student, referred to as "Johnny Dinkleberry" frequently would draw a stick cartoon on a memo board hanging on the outside of another's door. These cartoons were crude, yet in each episode Mr. Stickman died a gruesome death. I liked the concept and went with it. I started to draw it during the second semester of my Junior year. I couldn't draw. Our current Justice cartoonist laughed at my poor art skills. I decided to try something different and figured I could just draw circles, squares and lines on the computer using the QuarkXpress desktop publishing program we used at the Justice. It worked and the Editor-In-Chief at the time let it fly. The first episode didn't get the rave reviews I wanted, but very quickly this changed as the second episode was a hit! I
wanted to make the cartoon political yet very simple, pointing out the most obvious to attract a widespan of readers. The issues were very widespread as well. They focused on the specific aspects of Brandeis life and the issues students dealt with everyday; from dealing with the administration to dealing with the Waltham Community to dealing with other students. As a result, the cartoon established a large fan base and eventually became a joke as the "Mr. Stickman Fan Club" was chartered by the Brandeis Student Senate. I made T-shirts and sold them for fun. This cartoon was definitely the highlight of my four-year career at Brandeis. My overall goal was to make fun of everything and everyone, including myself and to show the Brandeis community how silly and stupid we sometimes were. We lived a pampered life. The transition from College to real life is tough for everyone. This is the same challenge "The "New" Adventures of Mr. Stickman!" faces as I try to adapt it to the real world issues. The complexities and
responsibilities of the real world are much more than College life and determining what are common issues to poke fun at is the challenge. It's been almost four years since I left school and now I believe it is time to restart up this passion. There are a lot of "stickman" cartoons in the world, but there is only one Amazing Mr. Stickman. Its success will depend on you. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or ideas you may have for cartoons. I welcome them!
