Haha...its true. The film is ok at first, but when they get into space...man, is it stupid. The aliens are annoying.

I like the movie, it's pretty good for kids and I don't mind the aliens too much.

I loved this movie growing up, and it's still fun to watch. While I agree it's not what we expected to happen in the movie, I don't think it necessarily makes it bad. I thought it was actually funny. but the movie really isn't about the aliens, it's about these kids and their performances, and Ethan, River, and Bobby did a fantastic job.

the aliens are hilarious. I can't believe Rick Picardo (who played the doctor on Star Trek Voyager) played Starkiller and both Wak and his father! That's crazy!

I thought the aliens made perfect sense. All these creatures knew about humans was from what they saw on Earth television. So that was the only way they knew how to communicate with humans.

I like also the first half of the movie, it had some mysterious around it when they started to get the dreams and put themselves into building the artifact, but when the get into space the veil falls and it turns stupid.. i've not seen this movie in about 2 decades already, should re-watch it but i got that impression deeply in my head.

This film feels like a Spielberg movie isn't it. Sweet and wishful things happening. I sort of agree with them that once you get into outer space it doesn't live out to the buildup. I wish we would had more of the idea of the alien talking like tv shows for instance. But ah not imaginative enough. Too bad.

It was directed by Joe Dante who worked with Spielberg in Gremlins a year before this flim and two years after with Innerspace.
Explorers is one of my early childhood favorites. Although it will not be a family classic like The Goonies (which also came out in 1985), it is still a very pleasent family sci-fi film.
FYI, this is the first film I saw River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke!

damn Dante and Spielberg were fused at the hip, it seems, isn't it. It's like the stuff Steven liked but were not ambitious enough for him, he gave them to other people. You know pop culture cool stuff he liked as a kid from Tin Tin to kids on a ship/kids playing Pirates/kids doing anything, Sherlock Holmes, favorite tv shows(such as Twilight Zone even if he did one segment), etc...And with these movies you feel his hands are all over it. I'm surprised he was not involved in Cocoon.

I never really liked the second half of this movie either. In fact, when I was a kid I usually stopped watching it after they blast off for the second time. The movie isn't really about what happens up there though, it's about the kids being creative and building the space ship. For anyone like me as a kid, who liked to work with their hands and building things, this movie was very influential. I hadn't seen it for at least 15 years until last night. Do the same.
