i dont know about ... ( 5 months ago by kingstravinsky101)
i dont know about him following all the markings of the piece. In the Glenn gould reader.(a book with interviews and essays by gould). he stats that he didnt follow the marks for mozart or beethoven. he even ignore things like when to play soft or loud. plus he hated mozart and his middle and late works, he actually was really more a fan or the early works.and he had doubts about beethven early in his life. i think he just "grew" out of beethoven,
The not playing the ... ( 5 months ago by PuresMusic)
The not playing the dynamics ( soft and loud ) is because he was used ( ofcourse ) to play bach, who never used those dynamics, and bach was the composer to follow, so he played every composer in the style of bach, even chopin he played in straight tempi, with almost no dynamics, and if he used them he made them up himself.
thats not true he ... ( 5 months ago by kingstravinsky101)
thats not true he didnt lack in dynamics. he had prefect control on his playing. He just choose which ones he thought would good and changed them around. and even thou bach was a composer he liked, he didnt play everything like bach. plus bach might have liked dynamics in his music, bach prefered to composer his piece on a clavichord which had dynamics like a piano, but it was too soft to be used in concert. go listen to gould play ravel debussy and scribain.!!!!!

Whether or not he "hated" beethoven, mozart, or any composer, or whether or not he followed or not the marking as to where to play forte or piano, and with everything else as well, he was unique, he was an extraordinary musician with an original view on things. Who cares if he changes the tempo for all the variations? who cares is he doesn't follow the sheet music perfectly? He's an artist, and in the words of beethoven: "Do not mind what the score says, feel what you play, make music!"

While Murray Perahia is a fine pianist, he couldn't bring Gleen Gould his coffee nor his pharmacy prescription! This is the absolute best performance of this piece ever--just as Earl Wild's performance of the Rach 2 & 3, the Grieg and Tchai are the best as well! Enjoy~
Glenn Gould is a ... ( 2 months ago by requiemaeternam7)
Glenn Gould is a farcical skill-less joke and a travesty upon modern piano. He is no one and will be forgotten in a few years as he's mostly already been. Good at only the Goldberg variations, everything else he's an amateur.
I am sorry to said ... ( 2 months ago by woochizen)
I am sorry to said that when I watch this video, I feel that he's more like a actor than a pianist with high ablity of piano's skills and good feeling of the music piece by his own way. Sorry! I'm just a listener, has no knowledge of clasic music or any other kind of music, too.
I think you ment ... ( 1 month ago by beethovenbd)
I think you ment unorthodox, for he was anything but orthodox. And he indeed interpreted music in a very peculair, very `own` way.

To comments about Dynamics and Bach: these variations are actually a counterpoint of the Passacaglia in C minor by J.S. Bach...and as such they should be played with iron strength and molten brass. I believe he does this piece justice

kv466 - this comment is priceless! Whoever is worthy to bring coffee to Glenn Gould, it better be "double doubles" (but make it skim milk and raw sugar).
He was overly ... ( 1 month ago by portoxali)
He was overly emotional and eccentric person and he even used to sing during his performances, but he is sincere in these expressions and it is clearly heard in his masterful playing. No showman can play music so mysteriously especially the music that requires overly serious approach and dedication (like in the music of Bach and Beethoven, and we know that he was one of the best interpretators of such music.
Hi portoxali, this ... ( 1 month ago by woochizen)
Hi portoxali, this is fun to know that he sang when he played the piano. Thank you for this information. He must be a person who really enjoy what music's pieces he play.

woochizen, you may be interested to know that in later life, Glenn Gould considered public performance to be an anachronism- he was all about perfecting his performances through recordings. I believe that Mr. Gould is a true eccentric and is not displaying these histrionics to "show off." Rather, it is his natural reaction to the music.
In my opinion, Gould's humming and other oddities are a small price to pay for such insightful interpretations.
