Lee should be ... ( 1 year ago by Bobb9999)
Lee should be allowed to sing more songs.
Of the 3 singers, he's the only one who usually tries and succeeds in making his vocals count for something.
SY never made it big like Nirvana 'cause Kim's and Thurston's singing sucks most of the time, and music buyers like to hear singers who actually try to sing!

Sonic Youth never made it "big" (like it matters) because they're to different. There's a ton of bands that have horrible singers that made it "big" (like it matters, once again).
Name some bands ... ( 1 year ago by Bobb9999)
Name some bands then that made it big with singers as off key and indifferent about singing as Kim and Thurston usually are.
If SY paid as little attention to their guitar sounds as they do to their vocal sounds, they would have no reputations or success whatsoever!
-Or Thurston's pal Tom Verlaine of Television, a talented guy, but his poor singing ensured a low profile.
I'm saying they could be EVEN BETTER ARTISTS!

Each member sings the song that he/she wrote except in a few cases(i.e plastic sun lyrics by Thurston sung by kim)So get ur shit together fucktards.

sonic youth abides by a punk ethos.... do you really think they give a shit about how well their vocals sound?

the point of sonic youth isn't to gain a massive fan base. their early years in the "no wave" scene proved that. as for their sound, there's a ton of emotion behind those instruments and vocals. they're speaking up for a generation in a sense. and it may not always be "pretty" or sound how everyone wants it but it works because it expresses a feeling. i love them for it.

thats weird, i love lee renaldo, but he has my least fav voice. i think the others have more character. as for kim, i can see why some people wouldnt like her voice, but it goes with the music soo much and it's part of the sonic youth identitiy. it sounds fantastic. thurston's voice can either be really chilling or smooth as, he's good both ways, he's versatile.

When I was a 23 year old music geek/gigoer dork- the age that I was in 1991- my contention was that Nirvana was not a real grunge band- Killdozer and Tad were my ideas of grunge. Nirvana was pop/punk with some metal overtones. Metal as in the heavy shades of Cheap Trick.

shuut uuuuppp..... for one, Cheap Trick are great. He's a Whore is a classic!!!
For another, Nirvana to me have more in common with the punk thing and were more aligned with the whole tweecore thing that was happening too. Bands like Soundgarden are the ones that sound WAY more metal to me.
