wow words of wisdom you don't use the music to play the violin, but, you use the violin to play music. Never thought of that. That's absolutely brilliant Isaac. He must've thought of that while he was on the toilet.

Being Chinese I find this a little condescending. It's like the great white man has come to save us brown/yellow people from cultural inferiority. Not to say that the Chinese didn't greatly appreciate this but it drives home the point once again that Western cultural domination has a long legacy in Asia.

thats not correct. Players like Stern go all over the world bringing the same teaching because, after all, we have the emotions and aspirations and love for music.

being Chinese musician (i play both Chinese and "Western" music) i understand that China back then was at a juncture where there was huge loses in cultural teachings - Eastern and Western - due to the events that took place in the preceeding years. Stern praised accordingly that the younger generation was more expressive and the older generation played with lots of inhibition. did you actually watch the whole thing? he was there to teach as well as understand and learn.

Adoumri, this is not about the "great white man" who came to save the Chinese. This is about one of the greatest violinists of our time who came to China and brought with him his conviction of finding freedom and finding expression in music during a time when the Chinese society was beginning to open up. And, I think the audience felt more inspired than condescended.
