I was unaware of Turk`s second book. I did not like his first book because of his degrading remarks concerning Nelson Eddy.

Hi !
Not only the degrading remarks about Nelson as a person but Turk also degraded Nelson`s talent. According to Turk,Nelson was a mediocre singer.I have read the glowing reviews which Nelson recieved for his opera and concert appearances before he came to Hollywood. There is no doubt in my mind, that if he had not chosen to sign a movie contract, he would have had a successful career in Opera and concerts.
Yes that was a terrible dig at Nelson.

Thank you for posting this. I am currently reading "Sweethearts" and it's a wonderful book. It's heartbreaking that circumstances kept Ms. MacDonald and Mr. Eddy apart. I hope they are finally together and happy wherever they are.

Add me in as a believer in their romantic relationship. As you said in your book, the "This is Your Life" scene of Jeanette and Nelson together confirms my belief.
Jeanette and Nelson ... ( 5 months ago by 52claire)
Jeanette and Nelson are the only ones who know the truth and both are long gone. Interesting that Sharon Rich didn't tell this tale until long after both were dead. Interesting also that she is lining her pockets with this supposedly true story. I, for one, choose not to believe it. Jeanette had more chemistry with Gable in "San Francisco" than with Nelson. It's called "acting." Jeantte MacDonald was the greatest star ever and also a remarkable woman. Let her rest in peace, Ms. Rich

So What??? if their romance happened today, no one would care. During their era, just looking at some one not your spouse was scandalous. I for one am happy if they found love together. Good for them.

I just purchased "Sweethearts" from an amazon seller, the book about their love affair. As a person who is enamored of these two, who were obviously madly in love with each other, all I can say is that we have their love for each other is on Turner Classics Movies for everyone to see. How could you miss it!

I am in the middle of reading "Sweethearts." How sad for them that they could not transcend their careers and have a married life together. Two very stubborn people very much in love. At least we have their movies.

they were still lucky. life seldom accomodate our wishes but for these two, as said in 'camelot', for one brief shining moment, they were able to exist and interact with each other in their way in their own space and time. their body languages when they were shown together in their movies just simply could not mean anything else. i wish i could have seen them in person then even if only for that.

Jeanette Macdonald was a very strong minded individual and the idea that she was forced into a marriage to Gene Raymond by the studio is complete nonsense.
Eddy Nelson and ... ( 2 months ago by tommyboysailor333)
Eddy Nelson and Jeanette McDonald were in their souls actually literal TWIN FLAMES in love; that's why their singing of love rang SO true and deep with their fans. We all have a twin flame or other half; when God created us as balls of living fire, He split us into both male & female halves; since then, we have tragically, as the Famed Love Birds' movies goes, in the matter universe, we lost touch with our other self. In this New Age, we are meant to reunite once again as ONE and find TRUE love.
I remain undecided, ... ( 2 months ago by EDH1712)
I remain undecided, but I want to pose a question, why are there so many discrepancies regarding their relationship? I've read that they hated each other, they were pretty indifferent to each other--work relationship only, they were just really good friends, and lastly they were lovers. Sure does cover a lot of territory. Curious still since an intimate relationship can take on all those aspects.
Hi, Sharon Rich ... ( 1 month ago by maceddy)
Hi, Sharon Rich here. In answer to your question, you're correct that "an intimate relationship can take on all those aspects." In my research, I found all of the above applied. During the movie years, they were sometimes close - or not speaking. Some MGM'ers claimed they were icy or bickered on a particular film set, Others saw them as inseparable. Surprising to me, their closest years seemed to be right after WWII. The '50s were tenuous. I do name sources; most interviews were taped/videoed.
"Forced into a ... ( 1 month ago by maceddy)
"Forced into a marriage to Gene Raymond" is simplistic. Putting aside the how/why they met, MacDonald found Gene "just like Nelson without the rough edges" (her words). Gene and Nelson resembled each other somehwat, and had similar lousy childhoods. Other issues: Nelson wanted her to be a wife/mother while Gene was happy to have her continue as Star. Whatever the dynamics, when she had 2nd thoughts and tried to back out of the marriage, it is completely accurate that Mayer stopped her.
Sorry, but I first ... ( 1 month ago by maceddy)
Sorry, but I first wrote this story while both stars' spouses were living; neither one sued. In fact, when Gene Raymond had a meeting with a Paramount screenwriter re: a possible film version he was more concerned about being outed in the film then denying a J-N affair. He did not like Nelson much - but who can blame him, under the circumstances?
If you want to know ... ( 1 month ago by maceddy)
If you want to know what Jeanette MacDonald's voice really sounded like - untampered, with no "sound technician to modulate her voice..." then listen to her 1948 Hollywood Bowl Recital. Live concert,45 years old... she sounds darned good! Yes, it's a light voice, but that doesn't make it bad. Singing "Tosca" in "Rose Marie?" That role is for a spinto or more dramatic soprano, not a lyric. Opera singers often sang arias in films that they would never perform as a full opera on a stage. So what?
Jeanette `s voice ... ( 1 month ago by Gemini730)
Jeanette `s voice is beautiful on her live radio broadcasts. Except for the microphone, I think( please correct me if I`m wrong) that her voice on the live radio broadcasts had very little sound modulation.

I'm glad you're on the side of those of us who believe, or want to believe, that they were involved in more than just movie making. Thanks for your reply.
