great concerto and superb performance by Glenn Gould. Beethoven Concertos, for my opinion, are not at the level of Mozart Concertos (Ludwig best are simphonies...!), but the emperor is always the emperor :)

in my opinion this concerto is played with much more emotion and prose by Claudio Arrau. Although Gould does a fantastic job, some parts are off beat and seem forced unlike beethoven composed it.

Glen Gould, that eccentric genius. For me, Beethoven stands first among the greatest of composers. Gould performing this fine Beethoven concerto....it simply does not get any better.

I was never too great a fan of Glenn Gould. He just looks and sounds a little too constricted to me when he plays. He's very musical, but...

I think this was Gould's experiment where he wanted to try the Emperor Concerto with a constant tempo throughout -- without the usual speeding up and slowing down and long dramatic pauses at the emotional moments which most pianists like ... so it may come across as somewhat mechanical. Personally, I like it this way! But that's just me.

Just to add another thought... when I listen to a performer who "interprets" a composition, I often think "gosh, he or she is so sensitive, that long dramatic pause was so emotional, etc..." But when I listen to one of Gould's "non-interpretive" performances, I think "Gosh, Beethoven (or whoever) really could put a bunch of phrases together to create a magnificent work."
