Honestly, can't understand how anyone could like this performance with so many better ones out there. It's slow, filled with mistakes, and lots and lots of pianists could do better technically, musically, and interpretively.

the reason people enjoy this performance is for the piece. this song is beautiful and it doesn't matter if others are better it is perfectly fine as it is.

I'm almost inclined to agree with you. This is far too slow for my taste. However, Leonard Bernstein is one of those legendary performers that you forgive just because he's so epic. I hear a lot of his personality in this interpretation, and I think that's what attracts me. I used to have a recording in my collection of Leonard Bernstein directing the orchestra to play along an old player piano with a reel recorded by Gershwin himself. OMG! THAT was up to speed! Fastest "Blue" yet! It ROCKED!

Excuse me, I meant roll, not reel. It was a piano roll... You probably already knew what I was talking about, though.

Bernstein's 1960 recording, though I'm not a big fan of it, was much better than this. But my point is that there are so many better ones available, including Michael Tilson Thomas's, Earl Wild's, and my personal favorite, Ivan Davis, who did it with a jazz band. I've never liked the idea of conducting pieces like this from the keyboard; it was not meant to be this way, it usually does not serve the music well, and I think it is usually more about the ego of the performer than the music.

actually, as a response to your comment, hophmi, conducting from the keyboard from largely piano dominated pieces, like piano concertos, was the norm up to the time of even beethoven and berlioz, who changed conducting. mozart conducted all of his piano concertos as soloist and conductor. well, not all, but those that he played in.

Best version (besides Gershwin): Oscar Levant, who was a friend of GG. If you can find it read "A Smattering of Ignorance" by Levant--lots of anecdotes about Gershwin and the era.
